Berber or Amazigh new year 2969
Yennayer is the first month of the Berber Year.
The Berber people (Amazigh) in North Africa is a story that started there are more than
6000 years.
The Berber calendar dates from what is 950 before the Gregorian calendar, and the Berber language and culture predates the Arab conquests of North Africa in the 700s.
The berber celebrates the New Year on January 12, and on this occasion there were parades, concerts, conferences organized by the authorities in all regions of the country.
For the second year, Yennayer is an official holiday and this Saturday, January 12 was a holiday. It is both Berber New Year's Day and a popular festival.
Since independence in 1962, the Algerian authorities have claimed membership of the Arab world and the Muslim world. For decades, Berber activists demanded recognition of their culture, including that of Yennayer. But in 1980, during the Berber Spring, activists were imprisoned. In 2001, during demonstrations in Kabylia, more than 120 people were killed.
But in 2016, the authorities make the Berber language, Tamazight, which is spoken by about 30% of the country's inhabitants, an official language. In 2017, Yennayer becomes a holiday.
Several ambassadors from foreign countries in Algeria sent congratulatory messages on the occasion of the "Yennayer" month celebrations for Algerians.
I do not know for the title if it's "Berber New Year" or "The Berber People's Story".
Finally, for this occasion I wish everyone a very happy new year.
Thank you Nadjette 😊
