the famous open air dance floor in Sokolniki (Moscow): video and storysteemCreated with Sketch.

I don't know how long exist this dance floor (the video was made by me in the last year, but I remember this place from a long time ago). the dance floor in Sokolniki has some strange and special qualities:

  1. music that plays here, mostly is the 90-th years russian pop-music. it's a little unusual and contradict to "the trends" of contemporary russian mass culture (it is not just fashions, but regulated in official public places by the culture politics). as I see, and to my annoyance, I hear everywhere in Moscow now we all are listening - volens nolens - from municipal speakers in the parks, in the metro etc., a lot of vigorous the soviet music from soviet films, cartoon, just a soviet songs at all. and here - non.
and the more important thing about 90-th - these years, when the Soviet union had ended, were time of absolutely freedom in russia (political and any else) , but now it is marked as a time of chaos and power of bandits.

  2. the Sokolniki's dance floor is the almost exclusively for old people, lonely people at all, and there are a lot of very strange and fanciful persons. the dance floor located a near from park entrance and a lot of people go to here for see and laugh (Sokolniki park is extremely popular). but fanciful persons dance in any weather and with any numbers of people around, that gaze at them.

so I think it's rare and unique corner of independence, that survived from old times and exist by own rules.

*I'm always thinking here about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, photographs by Diana Arbus, paintings by Toulouse-Lautrec - do you?
