Reading: the cure for ignorance and manipulation, you better start to read!

in #life8 years ago

The other day I was at the gym doing my routine, I was too focused on my exercises but I couldn't avoid listening a man who was talking with his personal trainer about the right food to eat in order to gain muscle mass.

The trainer explained many things to this man, I wasn't really paying attention to their words but one particular sentence caught my attention.

This one was "Our body is everything we eat".

When we are talking about our body, this sentence is absolutely correct. We could train at the gym everyday, nevertheless if we don't eat a balanced diet, all that effort done at the gym will be in vain. Totally useless.

This is regard our body... But, what about our mind?

Our mind is the wheel of our actions, the way we think and the ideas we have make us act in some different ways than others.

What we have in our mind affects us in a 100% of our life, so... Why don't we use the same gaining muscle's rule of eating well with our own brain?

I mean, our fears, our desires, our goals, our ideology (for good or bad) and many other things are living very deep in our subconscious mind. But, how do we gain all these things over our living years?

Over our life we are influenced by: The closest people we spend time with (Our parents the most of the time), our main environment (That which we live in) and those things we see everyday (such as TV Shows, books, magazines, videogames and others).

In these times we have two option, being influenced by the environment or start taking control by feeding our brain with good information, information that you find correct no matter your ideology (although I recommend you to read variety of contents so as to build an objective opinion).

The books offer us a way to be informed of really many facts of any time you choose about any topic.

The books (I think it is) are the best way to influence the way we think. Today exist infinity of books about anything you want to read. You could read about psychology, money, politics, novels, tutorials and many other options.

I think the most we read, the most we will be prepared to do variety of things.

And the most important part is that we become less manipulable people. Look at the politicians, they could say whatever they want, but the only one who gives them power is you. And how do we know if they are telling us the truth? or, how do we know if one of them is the best choice for us? That's what i'm talking about.

And it's not only about politicians, it's about everybody. For example, someone could offer us a "great business", he could make it sound really great, but how do we know if that person is actually telling the truth? How do we know if that person doesn't want to cheat of us? If you were a person who doesn't like to read or get some valuable information, you could be an easy target for these kind of people.

And trust me, world is full of these people.

But in the other hand, if you were really well informed, you wouldn't be such an easy target for them, in fact you would have the character enough to find another good business by yourself, decreasing all the risks dramatically.

I know the experience is very valuable, but also the information we read is very valuable.

The thing is, why pick only one of them? why not take both?

You could spend years at the gym in order to get a shape body and finally get it done after really long time, but what if you eat well since the beginning?

The same happens with our brain, you could spend so many years trying to get something done with only your own experience mistaking and mistaking over and over again. But, what if we read some information before in order to be prepared for anything we want to do? wouldn't be a lot easier?

Try to imagine a doctor without any education commiting mistake after mistake. You wouldn't be so able to be pacient of that doctor, would you?

As Mark Twain said once: The one who can read but doesn't, is not in better conditions than a person who doesn't know to read.

Nowadays, we have many sources of valid information in the internet. The internet is one of the greatest inventions of all time because people could find almost anything on the network. We really don't have excuse for not reading, in these times is a lot easier than it was 30 or 40 years ago.

We are living in a world which is changing faster than ever before, and the cost of ignorance is really so expensive, more expensive than any kind of aducation in the world.

So, the question is: Are you really willing to pay the price of ignorance and manipulation? Or are you willing to take control of this fact? Think about it.

Great post, I made sure my kids were independent reeders by 5. I urge all parents to give that gift to their kids. What we learn in schools is limited, a reader expands knowledge beyond measure.

Dude that's really awesome, the majority of the parents today don't do that. It would be really nice if they would do the same, totally agreed with the thing about the school, it's totally limited.

I believe the majority of people poop. So in my mind everyone has time to read. Especially comic books. Leave some things by the bathroom for yourself to chew on for a bit. This has been a life hack from @cryplectibles
