The Lawnmower Brigade
Our sleepy little town of Wilmore is more akin to Andy Griffith's Mayberry than any other place I have ever been. And we take every opportunity to get together and party like it's 1940.
Our Main Street is shut down frequently for the entire community to come together and be festive. We have a Veteran's Day parade, a 4th of July parade, a Coaster Car Derby (think Little Rascals), a community flower sale, Treats on Main for Halloween, Shop Local Saturday, and an Old Fashioned Musical Christmas. Our parades are so large that it is a wonder there is anyone to watch on the streets! The boy scout troops, the swim teams, scores of old tractors and antique cars, all the politicians, and much more. The stars of the show, regardless of how cute the kids are, are the full-grown members of the Lawnmower Brigade.
The Lawnmower Brigade was founded in 1992 and is composed of lawn mower pushing men from the community. They have choreographed routines, and are the only music in the entire Independence Day parade. Unfortunately, it was raining rather hard during this year's parade, so the Brigade was unable to grace us with their presence, but the spirits of the parade goers would not be dampened. In fact, the swim teams just gathered water out of the gutters for their water guns to spray at those of us watching everyone go by. This simply added to the festivities, and everyone loved it!

How great! I find that small towns can easily become lost in the shuffle, but they are gems worth searching for. :)
