Can The Future Be Predicted? (English/Turkish)

in #life5 years ago

I'm trying to guess what the world will be like in the future to create a convincing background to the sci-fi stories and novels I wrote. For this purpose, I have been doing research on technologies, economic dynamics and changing social trends that have been developing for a long time.

Is it possible to predict the future in the light of the past and today's information? I believe this is partly possible. If I didn't have that kind of faith, I wouldn't have gone through all this trouble to get an idea of the future.

It is relatively easy to predict the future as it moves from micro to macro. It's relatively easy to predict the future of societies and the whole world. It is quite difficult to predict the fate of individuals and the fate of individual events. Nevertheless, with the idea that it is better than nothing, companies are trying to estimate the performance that individuals can show in the company by examining their academic and professional resumes during recruitment.

There have been cases where scenarios for the future of Turkey that are overly optimistic or pessimistic. For example, the Europeans, who had not been able to recover from the effects of the 2008 crisis in 2010, were optimistic about the future of Turkey by looking at the economic growth of that period. After 15-20 years, Turkey would capture Europe economically and socially. This situation is reversed after 2013. When interest rates started to rise in the world, Turkey suddenly lost its charm. However, from a long-term perspective, Turkey is neither flying to the moon nor sinking. It is a mediocre country, which constitutes roughly 1% of the world in terms of population and economic size.

In the history of the world, there were many economic crises and unusual economic prosperity periods that have lasted years. Nevertheless, the average world economy is growing roughly 3% annually. Population dynamics in the world and the pace of innovation causes growth. This economic growth is almost a necessity, independent of the performance of individuals, companies or even countries.

In the western world, in the 19. century, there was a great wind of determinism. Newton's law of motion states that when the initial conditions of an object are known, its motion will be completely predictable. If this is the case, it is possible to predict the future by looking at the current data. In the 20th century, quantum physics led to the weakening of the idea of determinism. Quantum physics showed that it was impossible to predict the future for objects below a certain scale. This state of uncertainty was not due to the lack of computational capacity or ignorance but to the nature of particles such as light, electrons, etc. of that scale.

Aside from quantum particles, there are also dynamics that make it difficult to predict objects on the scale we can see through the eye. The main effect of these dynamics is reaction mechanisms. Working through supply and demand movements on the chaotic functioning of markets and this aspect that has a fairly simple mathematical foundation can take place. The mechanism of action and reaction allows the emergence of complex patterns form simple mathematical components. Chaos, also known as the butterfly effect, can trigger large events of very small random effects. According to the famous example given, a butterfly's wing flap can trigger a large-scale storm when conditions are appropriate. The start of the Arab Spring with the burning of a Tunisian teenager is an example of chaotic dynamics.

Future in this chaotic world is full of surprises. Intellectuals were arguing whether Turkey would be a liberal democratic country or a communist country in the seventies . No one could predict that an Islamist power in Turkey would be in power after the millennium.

Despite all these difficulties, as you go from particular to general and expand the time window, you can distinguish the trends that have been valid for a long time.

Urbanization is such a trend. The first apartments appeared in ancient Rome. For centuries, the migration of people from small settlements to cities gradually continued. It's not in vain that the favorite places of sci-fi novels are skyscrapers. With the transition from hunter-gatherer to the agricultural society, people started to gather in villages first. Then the cities, metropolises, and megacities came. This situation has an economic basis. As people gather in urban centers, the unit cost of infrastructure such as electricity, water, internet, etc is decreasing. Economic efficiency and innovation increase by 10% when the number of people living in residential areas increases by 2 times. As the number of people doubled, economic prosperity rises by 10%. In the World, megacities like Istanbul offers the highest economic well-being to those living in that country.

Population growth is also a steady trend throughout the history of mankind. As technological advances allow more people to be fed, the population of people in the world has steadily increased. This leads to negative consequences for other living beings such as the lack of living space and environmental pollution. Today, the population in developed countries is almost at a standstill. In developing countries like Turkey, population growth rates have dramatically decreased. Rapid population growth is now unique to less developed societies in Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East. Turkey's population is expected to be stable by reaching 100 million in 2050 if large amounts of foreign migration are not taken. The world population is expected to be almost stagnant at the level of 10 billion by 2050.

According to the idea of historicism that Karl Marx took over from Hegel, the development of civilization in the world is a compulsory process independent of individuals, corporations, and societies. Marx argued that in capitalism analysis this process of development would necessarily lead to communism. He was partially right, partly wrong. The communist revolution took place not in developed countries, but in relatively less developed Russia. Communism was dissolved in 1989, although it was a newer order compared to capitalism. At least nowadays, China, who is a Communist in discourse, is a candidate for world leadership.

Kurzweil showed that historical development is not only determinant but also that this development has been accelerated by technological trends. Although Kurzweil does not refer to Hegel or Marx, I am establishing the bond.

The agenda of that era affects future predictions. The hottest agenda of the 1950s, 1960s, and 70s was nuclear energy and space studies. Deep traces of this agenda can be seen in the sci-fi novels and the sci-fi films written at the time. It was thought that the journey between planets and even stars would be possible in the 2000's when the moon was set foot. Nuclear energy would be the determinant of the future. Today, let alone travel to another star, any human being has not visited even to the neighboring planet Mars. Space 1999 series remained a pleasant memory. Flying cars are not still out there. Today's favorite energy source is not nuclear, but solar energy.

False scholars claiming to have seen the future have been in the past, and they are present today. As with any issue, we need to be cautious about the claims raised in this regard.

No matter how difficult it is to predict the future, we can't afford to give up this delightful endeavor. We have to continue our efforts to plan our future in a rational way and to prepare a better future for our children.

If you understand the human mind, you can predict the future. Humans go down certain psychological pathways. If you know the pathway, you can see what people are likely to do because you know their goals and strategies. However, because we have free will, it's always a probability. If you know other people's strategies, you are able to make your own predictions, allowing you to modify your own strategies, thereby sabotaging the predictions of others. Predictions themselves change the outcomes. Free Will recognizes that there is a short window through which we can see into the future, but we can't see farther because we can change. If we ever find out how change works, we'll have to find the 2nd derivative to maintain free will. Ray Kurzweil seems to think we haven't evolved to the point where we can overcome this, and that AI is the next step of intelligent expansion, but I have faith that quantum leap in consciousness will come before the singularity..

That is a very thoughtful post. What is a quantum leap in consciousness? Why is singularity?

People just are blind to how the world works, and people who know better are able to exploit that. I'm saying I hope people wake up and learn the lesson that there are natural laws that can't be broken without consequence.. The singularity is important because of the exponential acceleration of progress. AI will someday become far smarter than us, and it will happen very quickly. Just imagine what one could do, feeding a superintelligent AI big data and adding artificial stimuli.. Prediction becomes trivial, but then so does controlling the future.

Yes this is obviously predicted to carry

What a fantastic piece to read. Thanks for that! I would like to emphasise one part.

Population dynamics in the world and the pace of innovation are driving growth. This economic growth is almost a necessity, independent of the performance of individuals, companies or even countries.

If we want to predict the future, I think we have to take into account the fact that economic growth is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve, due to declining productivity increases, the saturation of markets and environmental degradation. If the current trends continue, we may even no longer have any growth in Europe within ten years. In my opinion, the 'post-growth movement' will become stronger and stronger. It is time for an economy in which economic growth is no longer central. Today we are crossing multiple safe environmental limits of our planet, and it is clear that economic activities can not be sufficiently disconnected from resource use or pollution.

I guess if the future will be predicted then the life would be no fun!

There would be no need for future to happen :)

Ya, exactly!

I must say, coincidence you will probably happened, and certainly life like the novel century is often filled with coincidence. Yet through history we have believed that the future may be shown to us in various ways: particularly in dreams which contain, surely, many of our fantasies.

Yes, I guess. Dreams draw upon unconscious information that you are not, by definition, normally aware of. Most are just stress release, but sometimes they can be prophetic.

Actually, sometimes they can. If you are thinking about something for a couple of days, you will eventually get a dream about it when you sleep. In that dream, you might see the probable things that can happen ahead because your mind already knows the possibilities that might follow the current scenario of your life.

Thank you for this post-upvoted and resteemed. Please take a look at my new post and let me know what you think. I am new so I am looking for some feedback-https://steemit.com/steem/@kirstenboic/the-vainglory-effect-why-we-actually-need-to-love-ourselves-too

Although I don't fully believe in predictions, it would be actually great to meet someone who could do it and prove me otherwise. But, us humans wont feel the sense of excitement and thrill if we already know what's going to happen next.

future is uncertain, i believe. no one knows what exactly will happen tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in the future. only God knows. okay taking your thoughts in this post for example, if we can predict the future, we will lose the excitement that future has to offer (that would be a one of the cons). but we can move towards the future that we wanted should we be able to predict what future lies ahead of us.

Interesting! Worth the read.
