Can the chewing gum be dangerous to swallow because it sticks in the intestine - or does it break down as easily as other foods?

A whimsical myth claims that a chewing gum stays in the body for seven years after accidentally swallowing it. The reason is said that the chewing gum sticks to the inside of the stomach and does not break into the digestion.

This horror story, however, lacks support in reality: A chewing gum follows the same way through the gastrointestinal tract as any other food and comes out with the stool after about 24 hours.

There is no risk that the chewing gum stickes to the road and, for example, sticks into the stomach because it will always be surrounded by fluid, just like when it is in your mouth.

Chewing gum slides easily through the stomach and intestines

Chewing gum consists of a gum base with added flavor, color and sweeteners. The sweeteners break into the stomach and intestines while the gum base is indigestible, as well as corn kernels.

Chewing gum therefore passes largely untouched through the stomach and in the intestines, muscle contraction sees to transport the chewing gum further.

In the end, it is excreted as a stool through the rectum opening.

The way of the food through the body
When you accidentally swallow a chewing gum, it passes through digestion as well as everything else we eat.

Enzymes in the body slowly slice our food until it reaches the other end like stools.
