Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Soon, there will be a massive migration of people especially in East Asia countries. Hopping onto planes, trains and automobiles to get back to their hometown or village in time to pay respect to elders and celebrate reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year.

Soon the cities would be quiet but for now the malls and markets are abuzz with activity. Decorations of red accents like lanterns and banners reflect visions of health, prosperity and abundance and to usher in the festive mood of celebration.

Street vendors display auspicious bamboo and lime plants accessorised with imitation gold ingots and red ribbons. Mandarin oranges are in great demand and an absolute must have in the house and also to give away to guests. Popular cookies to serve to guests and Chinese glutinous rice cakes for the altar can also be purchased instead of slaving over hot ovens and stoves as in the days of old.
