China, 87 percent of executions have been carried out in four other countries - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Pakistan.

For the first time since 2006, the United States fell to seventh place behind Egypt on the list of most countries to execute the executions. The United States saw 20 executions in 2016, the lowest since 1991.

During the year 2016, 23 countries executed executions, one in eight countries around the world. This number has fallen from 20 years ago (that is, when 40 executions were carried out in 1997). Belarus, Botswana, Nigeria and the authorities in the State of Palestine resumed execution in 2016, while Chad, India, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates have not carried out executions during the past year, although they have witnessed executions in 2015.

141 countries, or nearly two thirds of the world, abolished the death penalty in law or in practice.

In 2016, Benin and Nauru abolished the death penalty in law for all crimes. A total of 104 countries have done the same thing, which constitutes the majority of the world's countries, where the number of countries that had abolished the full sentence had not exceeded 64 in 1997.

Deaths or amnesties were recorded in 28 countries during 2016. At least 60 people were sentenced to death in nine countries during 2016: Bangladesh (4), China (5), Ghana (1) ), Kuwait (5), Mauritania (1), Nigeria (32), Sudan (9), Taiwan (1) and Vietnam (2).

Amnesty International recorded 3,177 death sentences in 55 countries in 2016, a significant increase over the total sentencing in 2015 (1998 in 61 countries). There has been a significant increase in 12 countries, but the increase in some, such as Thailand, for example, is due to the authorities providing detailed information to Amnesty International.

At least 1,8448 people remained in death by the end of 2016. The following methods were used for execution in different parts of the world: head-cut by sword, hanging, lethal injection, and shot. Public executions were carried out in Iran (at least 33 executions) and North Korea.

In many countries where people have been sentenced to death or executed, judicial procedures have not been met by international standards in the area of ​​fair trial. This sometimes included extracting "confessions" under torture and other ill-treatment, particularly in Bahrain, China, Iran, Iraq, North Korea and Saudi Arabia.
