Why I choose to be in the 1%

No, not that 1%, not the 1% that wants to take everything from the other 99% I want to be in the good 1%.

Something that I always wanted to do when I was younger was to help people and animals out. I believe that we all have an innate calling to help others that are in a worse position than ourselves. I have given many hours to volunteering  in animal shelters, local community efforts, sports clubs and raising funds for rescue groups who help Rotties (they are just my favourite doggies). But with the children in my home growing and me wanting to spend more and more time with them I have lost the time I used to spend helping out. So this leaves me in a bit of a pickle. However I have increased my earning power in my JOB.

So now I earn more money but have less of my precious time, after all you can always earn more money but you can never get your time back. This is something I never thought about in my younger years. Last year I suffered an injury which pretty much wiped out my whole summer, killed any activities I had planned with my family (we are very out doors people) such as surf holidays, hill walking, rock climbing, bmx racing etc. My youngest children are 8 and 10, these years are like gold to me. The kids are young enough to still want to spend time with us and not grumpy like they will be in just a few short years. We have an older son who just turned 18! He is a man now, although still in secondary school he is now fully responsible for his own actions. He doesn't want to go on camping holidays or things like that, his time now is devoted to gaming, training and chasing members of the opposite sex. It gives me great pride to watch him, after all we raised him, to see how he is a confident and kind young man really brings warmth to my heart.

I digress, back to the 1%. I want to spend as much time as possible with my family, I want to help others out. This leaves me with donation. How easy is that to do? Pretty easy, I took my net monthly wage decided it by 100 and now I donate at a minimum 1% of my take home pay to three charities.  But how do you choose? How do you decide who you should help out? For me it was simple enough, Being a parent and knowing the priceless gift of healthy children means that my first 2 choices would be related to children. I also wanted to give something back to animals, we take so much from animals on this planet. We really leave very little for them, some we take everything from.

The three charities I donate to every month are

1: Temple street foundation.

The Temple Street Foundation raises funds to enable Temple Street Children's University Hospital to continue to provide world class care to Ireland's sickest children.  To date they have raised €50 million to help make the children who are in the system to be as comfortable as possible.

2: Barretstown.

At Barretstown they run residential camps and programmes for children and their families affected by cancer and serious illness.

They offer a range of adventurous, fun and challenging activities which are supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care. This service is amazing and it lets kids be kids, no matter what illness they are effected by. This also gives hard working parents much needed respite care so they can focus on themselves, even for just a weekend. Spending your every waking hour caring for a seriously ill child is backbreaking. Giving these parents just a small break can make a huge difference in everyone's life.

3: Eden farmed animal sanctuary.

Eden Farmed Animal Sanctuary, Ireland is a grassroots vegan sanctuary. It is run by one person on a voluntary, unpaid basis, with the help of volunteers and paid external services. It is not affiliated with any other organisation.

The primary function of Eden is to provide a home to its residents, most of whom have been rescued from animal agriculture. Eden is also affiliated with The Compassion Foundation of Ireland, a psychology practice that researches and promotes the non-violent philosophy of veganism, and incorporates veganism in its clinical programmes. Eden is also affiliated with Matilda’s Promise, Animal Rights and Vegan Education Centre. Go Vegan World, public educational campaign, is one aspect of the work of Matilda’s Promise. Other activities include publications, workshops, practical demonstrations and online educational courses.

The amount I donate every month is set, it is a direct debit from my account, I don't even have to think about it. For less that the cost of one night out a month I can help make a difference to the charities I support. Think about your own life, think about how you could at some stage throughout that life you could need a service that relies on public donations and volunteer workers.

In a world where not giving a fuck is the mantra why not go against the crowd and actually give a fuck about something! Most charities are crying out for donations of money, time or resources that cost you very little.

Thanks for checking it out. Yep, I think we need to really spend more of our time and money on things that really matter, possessions will only last for so long.

That's a wonderful thing to do! Like you said, if it is automatically taken out you don't even miss it! The charity portion is part of why I like doing a lot of running races. Most of the races I do donate the proceeds to different charities, so I not only get events to train for to keep me on my running routine but then I also get to put a little bit toward organizations that really need it. Thanks for the reminder to keep doing better! :)

Excellent motivation too! Anything that pushes us to go further and yet help others is a great idea IMO. i mean its just a win win, we get healthier and the charity gets the bonus donation. Keep it up .

That is such a beautiful to do Derek! I think you are really making a change here and that you can help some people and animals with your donations is just amazing! Keep inspiring!

It's just such a small amount of what people earn, believe me I have been broke in the past, I have not known how I was going to pay bills or even feed my family towards the end of the month. Now times are more comfortable for us and anything I can do to help others really the least I can do.

So inspiring Derek! So happy for you!

Such a great post. And a good way to spread the 1% mindset. It's good that you give to local charities where you know that the money is well spent. Most local animal rescues are, as you said, Crying out for donations and barely get by.
I know a lot of high earners who spend their money on countinuosly buying new cars, watches, homes, clothes, you name it. All caught up in the matrix of consuming. With the Wish app as their best friend.
If they all just started to think before they buy the world would be a so much better place.

Could not agree more Nicole, we have been herded in to the mentality of always having new shit, what is wrong with a 6, 10, or 12 year old car? What is wrong with having a €50 or €100 watch? why push to be part of this elite consumerist society? For me this is part of veganism. After all contiguously buying new shit takes up more resources than using something that is already produced.

Even if you are broke, your time is still priceless, why not give some of that to people or animals who really need it. Thanks a mill for checking it out too.

Haha we drive a 13 year old car and it still works :D Might fall apart soon but we will continue to drive it until then.
For me it makes no sense to buy a new car each year or 6 months just because a cooler one got out.
I totally agree with you, I've also noticed that the more I get rid of things (donate to charity or sell) the more free I feel. Only keeping what I really use is so liberating and it have made me get in touch with my feelings more.
Not shopping them away means that you get in touch with yourself more and realize why you feel the way you do :)
I wish there was a shelter near by I could volunteer in. All of them are full and don't take new people in at the momement :D

What a great sign, no more volunteers needed!

My god, really, you have a 18-year-old son?? I thought you're not older than 30! (from your profile picture).
By the way, you look very similar to one Russian comedian - google Andrey Averin and tell me what you think))

As for this 1% thing - I've signed for this too, 2 years ago. And now I have a big ''debt'' to the charity - cause I don't know where to give, what is an effective donation. Just end up giving randomly to acquantances who treat ill animals (cats&dogs). I need to sit down and figure out which vegan groups are worth my donation)) Feels very good to give and keep track of it.

Well thank you very much. No I am the big 40 this year, it's just the vegan living that keeps me looking so young, and the love of a beautiful woman. I'll have to check out this Andrey chap, I doubt he's as handsome as me 😂.

For charity I just picked some that mean something to me, children and animals. Once it's done to be honest I just forget about it. If I ever won a large amount of money I would probably give half of it away. As long as I have enough to keep my family comfortable and safe why would I keep it..

Thanks for your detailed reply too I love to hear back from people in these things so I don't seem like a crazy person. 😨😨😨

then post more of your photos to make the case - you definitely look younger than 40, it will help people get more curious with the diet!

Oh Don't worry about that, I am working on a big post for my 40th birthday. Here is a picture of me and Mammybot from last year waiting on our Vegan chipper! Don't worry its faux fur too.

shit you look young! I'm jealous)) I'm 28 and I think I look older. I guess mostly because I eat very little raw food and sleep little because of baby.
Is it your wife?

Oh don't worry about that, it will pass, when we had 2 children under 3 I looked like I was about 90 years old LOL. I think hte key is to eat well, drink lots of water and exercise regularly. You'll be flying in no time. Yes that is my Wife, Natasha.

is Natasha also 40??? lol))) you gave me relief! now the task is to find time to exercise!

Don't worry, you will find time as the baby grows up. We always kept ourselves in shape.

Natasha is a bit younger than me, 37. So she will always look better than me ;-P
