Homemade mosquito trap
Mosquito trap with pet bottles
In today's home experiment we will learn how to make an easy and homemade mosquito trap. And as always, we will learn by playing with science since the trap is no more than a chemistry home experiment.
Materials:
* Scissors.
* Soda bottle of 1.5 liters or more.
* Sugar.
* Yeast.
* Cardboard or cardboard.
Process:
The first thing we are going to do to shape our homemade mosquito trap is to cut the bottle with the scissors, at a distance of approximately 10 cm below the peak, as shown in the video. The result will be a vessel shaped like a vessel (bottom of the bottle) and a funnel (top of the bottle).
Now we have to place the funnel inverted as you can see in the picture above. If both parts are firm, we leave it like that, if not, we fix it with adhesive tape.
Now we have to boil 200 ml of water, which is about the content of a small glass. Once the water boils, turn off the heat and place four tablespoons of sugar and stir until all is dissolved. Let the water and sugar solution cool, but do not put it in the refrigerator.
To continue with the homemade mosquito trap, pour the "mixture" into the bottle, and add a piece of yeast. Remember that the yeast should not be powdered but it is like a soft paste that is bought like this. The size of the piece should be such that it passes through the spout of the funnel, and leave it that way, do not break it into smaller pieces.
Finally, put cardboard or cardboard around the trap, so that it can not reach sunlight.
¿How does it work?
As we said, our homemade trap is actually a chemistry experiment.
Yeasts react with sugars to produce a gas called carbon dioxide. If you pay attention, to the cakes (for example) they are put yeast, which reacts with the sugar of the same, to produce this gas. The result is that spongy mass, full of bubbles inside, which are only small amounts of carbon dioxide generated during cooking.
We fire carbon dioxide when we breathe. And this is how mosquitoes find us and the rest of the animals, following the traces of this gas.
So the yeast and the sugar will generate the gas to draw them into the bottle. Once they enter, it will be almost impossible for them to leave again because of the trap's shape.
The reason for preventing sunlight from reaching the trap is that the ultra violet rays react with the microorganisms of the yeast.
According to the experts, after 15 days the yeast will be exhausted and you will have to carry out the process again. Place your homemade mosquito trap in a cool and humid place, where they shelter, so it will be easier to catch them :).
