एक बार महाराज शिवाजी के सामने सरदारों नें मुगलों से युद्ध में प्राप्त एक शाही मुग़ल सुन्दरी पेश की । सुंदर युवती ! और फिर शत्रु मुग़ल खानदान की । युवती थर-थर कांप रही थी, उसे प्राणों का उतना भय नहीं था जितना कि शत्रु द्वारा आबरू लुटे जाने का । वह असहाय थी । अपने कट्टर शत्रुओं के शिकंजे में फंस चुकी थी । मुक्ति का कोई उपाय नहीं था । इस अवस्था में उसे शिवाजी के सामने, मुगलों के उपहार के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया गया । सरदार बड़े प्रसन्न थे । उन्हें इसके बदले शिवाजी की ओर से बड़े-बड़े उपहार और शाबासी मिलने की आशा थी । दरबार में सभी उस अनिन्ध्य सुन्दरी की ओर दृष्टि गड़ाए थे । महाराज शिवाजी भी उसके सौन्दर्य को एकटक निरख रहे थे । महाराज शिवाजी से एक सरदार ने निवेदन किया कि “महाराज, अब तो यह आपकी ही है, हमेशा ही इसे निकट से देखते रहिएगा ।” शिवाजी की तन्द्रा टूटी । क्रुद्ध दृष्टि मानों उस सरदार को भस्म करने के लिए उठी । सरदार थर-थर कांपने लगा । उसे अपनी ध्रष्टता का भान हुआ और उसने क्षमा मांगी । दरबार में एक अजीब-सा सन्नाटा छा गया । किसी को कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा था । तब शिवाजी ने सभी को सम्बोधित कर गंभीर स्वर में कहा, “मेरा शत्रु औरगंजेब है । मुग़ल सल्तनत है । यह असहाय सुन्दरी नहीं है । यह हम सबकी माता और बहनों के समान आदरणीया है । इसे किसी प्रकार का कष्ट दिए बिना सम्मान सहित मुगलों को सौंप दिया जाए । मैं इसे इसलिए देखता रहा कि क्या यह अच्छा होता कि मेरी माता जीजाबाई भी इतनी ही सुंदर होती तो मैं, उसका बेटा भी इतना ही सुंदर होता ।” यह थी शिवाजी के चरित्र की उज्ज्वलता और दृढ़ता । यदि मुगलों को नहीं, तो उनके मन को तो अवश्य ही इस घटना ने जीत लिया । ऐसे ही उज्ज्वल चरित्रों से इतिहास बनता है । जाति और देश धन्य होते हैं । ऐसे सपूतों की गौरव गाथा सदैव के लिए अमर हो जाती है । चारित्रिक दृढ़ता शत्रुमन पर अमित प्रभाव डालती है । उस पर विजय पा लेती है । साहस व सफलता का रहस्य इसी में है । इसका प्रभाव अमित होता है । शत्रु भी गुणगान करने लगता है । चरित्र में एक अनोखी आकर्षण शक्ति समाई होती है । कोई भी उससे आकर्षित हुए बिना नहीं रहता । अदम्य साहस और उत्साह इससे मिलता है । सफलता सत्यमेव चरण चूमती है । सच्चरित्र का जीवन आदर्श जीवन होता है । सभी उससे प्रेरणा लेते हैं । उसके चरित्र को अपने जीवन का आदर्श बनाते है । इसी से सुयश मिलता है तथा गौरव बढ़ता है ।

व्यक्तिगत चरित्र के अतिरिक्त सामूहिक रूप से किसी जाति-विशेष का चरित्र भी आदर्श स्थापित करता है और प्रेरणा का स्त्रोत बनता है । जातीय चरित्र उस सम्पूर्ण जाति की विशेषता होती है । राजपूत जाति का चरित्र अपनी वीरता और शरणागत की रक्षा के लिए संसार-प्रसिद्द रहा है । इस जाति की वीरता का विश्व में कोई जवाब नहीं था जो कि अन्य जातियों के लिए आदर्श था । अंग्रेज जाति अपनी लगन और अनुशाशन के लिए संसार में प्रसिद्द है । जातीय चरित्र सम्पूर्ण जाति को गौरव दिलाता है । सम्पूर्ण जाति का उत्थान करता है । जातीय चरित्र एक सामूहिक उत्थान है, उच्चादर्श है तथा उसकी विशेषता है जो कि अन्य जातियों के लिए प्रेरणा का काम करती है । जाति से ऊपर उठकर एक राष्ट्रीय चरित्र होता है जो सम्पूर्ण राष्ट्र का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है । राष्ट्र के उत्थान में एक सक्रीय भूमिका निभाता है । इससे देश विश्व में अपना नाम ऊँचा करता है । राष्ट्रीय चरित्र वस्तुतः उसके नगरीय चरित्र के उच्चादर्शों से बनता है । नागरिकों के व्यक्तिगत चरित्र का ही प्रतिबिम्ब उसमे होता है । उसी से सामूहिक शक्ति जागृत होती है जो राष्ट्रों को दृढ़ता प्रदान करती है, उन्हें स्थिर बनाती है । इसका प्रभाव बहुत अधिक होता है । विश्व उससे प्रभावित होता है ।

चारित्रिक दोष अक्षम्य होता है । कितने ही बड़े व्यक्ति की प्रतिष्ठा उसके चारित्रिक दोषों के प्रकट होने पर धुल में मिल जाती है । उसके प्रति श्रद्धा में कमी आ जाती है, उसका प्रभाव घट जाता है । नाम कलंकित होता है । ब्रिटेन में मैकमिलन मंत्रिमंडल में एक मंत्री के किसी वेश्या से अनैतिक सम्बन्ध प्रमाणित होने पर (जिसे कि प्रोफ्युमों कांड के नाम से जाना गया) उस मंत्री की ही नहीं, सारे देश की बदनामी हुई । दुश्चरित्रता से बड़ी बदनामी होती है । देश और समाज का नाम कलंकित होता है । चारित्रिक दोष इन्सांन को प्रगति नहीं करने देता, पतन की ओर ले जाता है । अत: चारित्रिक दृढ़ता व्यक्ति, समाज और देश के लिए बहुत आवश्यक है । इसके बिना जीवन में दृढ़ता का अभाव रहता है । स्थिरता नहीं आती । सुयश नहीं मिलता । कार्य-शक्ति और प्रभाव में वृद्धि नहीं होती । धन-हानि होने पर उसे फिर प्राप्त किया जा सकता है । स्वास्थ्य हानि को भी प्रयास करके फिर से अच्छे स्वास्थ्य में बदला जा सकता है किन्तु एक बार चारित्रिक दोष प्रमाणित होने पर अपकीर्ति का कलंक सदा के लिए माथे पर लग जाता है । यह अमिट होता है । अत: ऐसे कलंक से जीवन को सदैव बचाए रखना चाहिए । मात्र अच्छा होना ही पर्याप्त नहीं होता । दुनिया की नजर में भी अच्छा होना चाहिए । चरित्र एक अमूल्य हीरा है । जीवन का सब कुछ यही है । इसी में मान-सम्मान, यश-प्रतिष्ठा और श्रद्धा-भाव सन्निहित है । अत: हर हालत में हर क्षण इसकी दृढ़ता से रक्षा करनी चाहिए । सदैव सजग रहना चाहिए कि इस अमूल्य हीरे की चमक पर कलंक की छाया गिरकर इसकी चमक को धुंधली न करे ।
