The Diference between Happiness and Pleasure!!

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Good morning my fellow Steemians!

Today I'll share a short reflection concerning the diference between happiness and pleasure.

In our current society we tend to create a fake version of our lives and then display them in the social medias. Making the world a place where everyone is constantly enjoying themselves... according to social medias.

Another factor to consider is, the hedonistic ways that we have become accustomed to. Every where you look, people are induced to "have fun" that usually consists on some unhealthy behaviour. On the other side you're also bombarded with self claimed guru's that preach the "Just be happy" mantra to whomever wants to listen.

Confusion starts to arrive.

Our society keeps talking about being happy no matter what, just be happy. But when was such an advice actually beneficiary for anyone. It's totally superficial like a brand slogan... we keep hearing it but we never go deep into what happiness is or how to get it. Yet we keep repeating that mantra on an endless loop.

On the other end, having fun (witch always refers to pleasure) has been elevated to an extremist religion.

So what's the diference?

. What is Happiness?

Happiness as a lasting felling, something that will shape your posture and view of life and the world. It will not only make you fell good at the moment, but will make you fell good all the time. It will help you achieve your mission in life and it will make you a stringer and better person.

Things like finishing a book you where writing or having a long and meaningful relationship can be associated with happiness.

. What is pleasure?

Pleasure is a momentary rush, something that will come and go. Something you want to do at the moment but in many cases will make you feel bad after. Unlike happiness, pleasure is very well explained in our society. Constantly we have access to a plan in detail on how to get it.

Things like, getting drunk, buying shit you don't need, instant gratification... can be associated with pleasure.

Now a days pleasure is pushed to a degree where, if you don't seek pleasure at all times... you are "wired" or "boring"... Hedonistic is the new norm.

I would say this is worth thinking about ...

While a certain amount of pleasure is just part of life, I believe we should focus more on happiness. Really look into happiness and what we should do to get it.

Yes I also believe that we are not entitled to being happy, we should work for it... and slogans like "just be happy" are more connected to the pleasure aspect than any tother thing.

One good way to figure this out is:

  1. Minimise the time you spend doing things you don't like.

  2. Think of the repercussions of your actions. While is essencial to live in the present, I believe taking into account the re-actions of your actions could guide you in the road to happiness.

  3. Mainly, see what do you like to do, that will also bring you future well being. For example, personally one of the things I love the most is to work on my creative endeavours, writing a script or making a music video and so on... So I tend to double down on it. I spend as much time as possible doing what I love that will also be good for me in the future.

  4. Prioritise! Figure out what is really important to you!!

In Short

Think of Pleasure has a double giant burger with everything on it. A giant burger that you will enjoy eating,(maybe with a hint of gluttony) but after eating it you'll fell sicky. That's pleasure.

Think of Happiness has just a good of a burger (maybe a bit less flashy and attractive) that will give you energy and well being for the day. That's Happiness!

Wow, this is an awesome article, personally I told myself a long time ago, that what people post is social media es never going to be completely honest. I see social media the same way I see any other mass media, it has been planned and select it so that you watch it and have the reaction they want.
About happiness, I agree, I actually think it more about balance. I think I wouldn't have become the person I am if I hadn't had to live some pretty crappy experiences, but those experiences are the ones that make me be grateful for what I have or what I accomplish. love the post!

Yes, I could not agree more!!

Image cerated in social media is indeed cerated with a goal in mind... that contributes to the quest of "Happiness" that in turn will end in more frustration. (Since it's not happiness it makes us pursuit.

And yes, crapy experiences can lead to happiness, specially in the gratitude side, like you said. (Gratitude, that's another one that's disappearing a bit from our society too)

I would say that's actually a great way to distinguish the two. Happiness is sometimes connected to a past struggle. While pleasure is all about the present immediate gratification.

Thanks for your comment!!

That is also true, additionally I think happiness also means being aware of the feeling and the gratefulness, pleasure just comes and goes.

Exactly!!!

A very great article that you shared with us @maxjoy let's try to be more happy that seeking pleasure ... Have a nice day ;)

Thanks @shoshin! Very happy you liked it!!

Let's keep on the happiness path indeed!!
