One of the most beloved figures in Brazil and in the world is undoubtedly Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, better known as Pele, who has been recognized by journalists, former footballers, fans and sports experts as the best soccer player of all times.
Pelé was born on October 23, 1940, and at the age of 10, he played barefoot soccer on the streets of Brazil, his native country. He debuted with the Brazilian team just 17 years old, standing out for his great technical skills and his powerful shot on goal with both legs, which consecrated him as the King of Soccer.
With his particular style Pelé managed to lead important sporting triumphs, such as the World Cups of Soccer of 1958, 1962 and 1970, turning the Brazilian team, club where he spent most of his life, into one of the best selections in the world, achieving become the top scorer with 1,284 goals in 1,363 games according to statistics.
Among the more than 100 distinctions and recognitions granted to Pele include: Citizen of the World by the UN (1977); International Peace Prize, in 1978; Athlete of the Century Award in 1980; Ambassador of Education, Science, Culture and Good Wishes of UNESCO (1994); Knight of Honor of the British Empire (1997); Ambassador for Ecology and the Environment by the UN (1992); Minister of Sports of Brazil (1,994) and Sports Ambassador at the World Economic Forum in Davos (2006). In 2014, FIFA awarded him the Golden Ball and in 2016 he was conferred the 'Olympic Order' by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), recognizing his extraordinary sports career.
The historic Brazilian former footballer, who today has 77 years of age, has been presenting some health problems, which have merited his admission to the operating room due to problems in his hip, meniscus and spine, ailments that have forced him to use cane and chair wheel. In January 2018, he also had to be admitted to the Hospital of Brazil due to severe exhaustion, from which, fortunately, he has recovered successfully.
Pelé continues to be a special guest in activities and tributes around the world, receiving the applause and recognition of the people who remember him with affection.
Despite the physical ailments of recent years, the great Pele does not lose heart and his good sense of humor. Looking ahead to the 2018 Dubai World Cup, he jokingly said that although he will not be able to play the 2018 World Cup, it feels good!
