White Christmas turns into a weather emergency.

in #life7 years ago

When I woke up this morning and looked out the window this is what I saw. For anyone who was dreaming of a white Christmas they got their wish! The weather service reported that Erie’s two-day snowfall total is 53 inches. And to make matters worse, the National Weather Service, has declared a lake-effect snow warning ongoing through Wednesday. They are estimating an additional 8 to 16 inches of snow for Erie, falling at rates of up to 3 inches per hour. Even this is a little bit too much for a city that is accustomed to annual snowfall amounts of 113 inches, when the average US city gets 26 inches of snow per year.

The TribLIVE reported Erie received 34 inches of snow on Christmas Day, not only breaking the all-time city Christmas record of 11 inches but also breaking the all-time daily snowfall record, which was 20 inches on Nov. 22, 1956.From midnight to 6 a.m. today, Erie received another 19 inches, making the storm total 53 inches, far and away the highest two-day total in Pennsylvania history. The previous record was 44 inches in Morgantown, Pa., From March 20-21, 1958.

So you may wonder how does this happen?

All this snow is due to "Lake-effect snow" that is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water, warming the lower layer of air which picks up water vapor from the lake, rises up through the colder air above, freezes and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores.

Weather.com was kind enough to share a video of our weather giving an explanation of how it all happened.

So with everything closing even large shopping malls......

Our little dog Sabian has it right.... This is how you deal with a weather emergency!

Happy christmas, all your days are always fun, although the weather is not supportive

Thanks I hope you are enjoying the season as well.

Yes with friends, hopefully the future continues to improve

Stay safe! No near death snow adventures! Keep sabian’s advice 😄🎄

Will do! I love being a hermit in the winter. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

I did thanks Mary 😄. We had our snow a few weeks back and we’re stuck in for a nice long time.

Nature has given you the opportunity to see white Christmas. Thank you for sharing beautiful articles with us.

Your welcome.

Oh man! I'm glad you have a cozy fireplace - and I hope you have a steep roof so some of that snow could slide off! So much snow is such a challenge -- where do they even put all that snow that falls on the city streets? With those temperatures, it's not melting anytime soon. I wonder if they push it off into Lake Erie, lol. Watch out for cabin fever! ; )

They just keep piling it up, this is crazy for sure. We have gotten the amount of snow in the month of December than we usually get all year.

It must look crazy going down the street, like tunnels, especially the sidewalks. I hope you don't have to shovel the snow in your yard!
