Oreganon benefits

in #life8 years ago

Today I share with my Steemit´s fellows a theme related to my garden. I am going to tell you about the Oreganon (Plectranthus amboinicus). Plant that use daily, as a dressing, in the preparation of my meals and that have planted in a very peculiar way in my house. I say that it is a very peculiar form because it is cultivated in a container, it is not cultivated in the soil as it is commonly done. My plant is highly productive since every day I use its leaves to prepare my meals and prepare my infusions.

The Oreganon is a perennial herbaceous plant, with robust and fleshy leaves, with a lot of smell that reproduces through cuttings, its reproduction is very fast. This plant is native to Central Asia. It has been cultivated for years in countries such as India, France, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Venezuela and Ecuador. This herb has many uses and to be used in many places and with different purposes is also known by various names, including: spanish thyme, cuban oregano, indian borage, mexican mint, oregano orejon, french oregano, indian oregano.

It can be used in infusions, as an herb to season meals, as a medicinal herb because it has a large amount of flavonoids, sugars and amino acids. In addition, many use it as an ornamental plant. For me, the most important value it has is a nutritional level that has a great antioxidant power. From this plant its leaves and essential oil are used.
Although the Oreganon has multivariate use I will not list a large number of them. The purpose of the article is to identify the active ingredients that give the plant, the property of being an excellent herb used medicinally and in turn to mention the reasons why this plant should be used at a nutritional level.

Flavonoids, sugars and amino acids present in the Oreganon

Biochemistry is one of my passions; however, the article is not a compendium of biochemistry. I will list the active ingredients that give the Oreganón that versatility of uses as a medicinal herb. These compounds are in the leaves and in the essential oil that is extracted from the plant.

Oreganon´s leaf contains acids, amino acids and sugars

❒ Acids: citric, rosmarinic, caffeic

❒ Amino acids: lysine, arginine, ornithine

❒ Sugars: glucose and fructose

Oreganon´s essential oil of has in its composition free alcohols, esters, oregano tiglato and ketones

❒ Free alcohols: thymol, carvacol, borneol

❒ Esters: naringenin.

❒ Ketones: isomenthone

The Oreganon is used as an activator of the circulatory system, as an expectorant, digestive, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant due to the presence of active substances that favor the production of nitric oxide which activates the immunological function and protects the DNA from oxidation.

This plant is an excellent immune activator and if used with some frequency as a dressing and ingested in infusions is able to eliminate intestinal parasites.

The Oreganon has been the subject of scientific studies for several years due to its different medicinal uses, among which is the review carried out by the Cuban Journal of Medicinal Plants in which all the active ingredients are exposed, both at the leaf and stems level of the Oreganon and in other investigations its use as an alternative food in animal agricultural production is exposed, specifically the poultry system, this is the case of the study in which the oregano was used as alternative food. This investigation was carried out in Ecuador.

According to the investigation of active ingredients in the Oreganon The presence of flavonoids such as apigenin, crysoeriol, cirsimaritin, cryiodictyol, luteolin, querectin, salvigenin and taxifolin in the essential oil of the oregano has been determined. It has also been detected that the leaves contain essential oil, reducing sugars, triterpene acids, flavonoids and in stems essential oil, amines, reducing sugars and triterpene acids.

It should be noted that this plant incorporated into the daily diet would increase the levels of immunity in humans and also activate the circulatory system. For this reason it is advisable to use this herb in the daily intake of the human being, with the possibility of being grown at home without requiring more space or complex management. It is an excellent option to have at home our medicinal herbs with nutritional value.
