To Whey Or Not To Whey?
This post I'm gonna talk about Whey proteine shakes. I'm gonna keep it very basic. If you think I'm wrong please correct me.Everbody have seen them before those big cans with proteine pouders. But do you need proteine shakes? And what is whey proteine to begin with.
"Whey is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. It is a byproduct of the manufacture of cheese or casein and has several commercial uses. Sweet whey is manufactured during the making of rennet types of hard cheese like Cheddar or Swiss cheese. Acid whey (also known as "sour whey") is a byproduct produced during the making of acid types of dairy products such as cottage cheese or strained yogurt."

Differences in Whey
This is very simple. There are 2 types:
- Whey Isolate
- Whey Concentrate. (cheaper)
Most pouders shakes are a mix with Whey concentrate and a small amount of Whey isolate. Or only Whey concentrate. Comparing those two you come to the conlusion that Whey isolate has more proteines per grams/scoop. Whey isolate also has less fat and lactose then Whey concentrate. But even though Whey Isolate is of "better' quality and purer, it doesn't mean you build more muscles with Whey isolate. And because of its low fatt level it's recommended for weight loss. At the moment there isn't a product wich contains more pure proteine then Whey Isolate. And if there is let me know.
Product | minimum % proteine | maximum % proteine |
---|---|---|
Whey Isolate | 87% | 98% |
Whey Concentrate | 50% | 80% |
A fiew examples of food with high sources of proteine
Nutrition | Proteine in 100 gr |
---|---|
Fish | 20 gr |
Mozarella(non fat) | 32 gr |
Lean chicken | 29 gr |
Lean beef | 36gr |
Pork loin | 30gr |
Why and when you need Whey?
You need an extra proteine source when you excercise. Especially after a workout, you can use some extra protein. To make a long story short. Proteine is like fuel for your muscles. You can't work without it. But as you can see above there are other foods that contains much proteine. The main advantage is that whey proteins are quickly converted into amino acids ( the building blocks for muscles) And right after a work out is when your body need it the most. And its practical. It's not that easy to take 100 steaks everywhere.
Last words
There are enough experts claiming that if you eat properly is enough to "fuel" your body. And after a workout you can eat some extra egs, meat, fish, cottage cheese etc. My motto: do your own research and don't believe the hype.
