THE JOY OF PROCRASTINATION

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Recently some fellow Steemians have mentioned and shown pictures that clearly demonstrate their procrastination abilities. Other fellow Steemians have followed en suite to explain how wonderful their procastination skills were and how several could earn a degree in the art of procrastination.!

Its such a delicate subject for so many people. It is something we all do from time to time. Trying to keep up with everything that has to be done and should be done in this already fast paced world can make your head spin furiously. It has huge disadvantages in the workplace and in your home life if you can not seem to get the everyday, ordinary things in control.

This really got me thinking about the perils of procrastination and decided to do some research. Everybody has an opinion and everybody is an expert. I found countless sites on why we do it and all the hidden messages and innuendo's. I found information written from every expert and so called expert on the subject. They said things like we need to be in control all the time, to we have no self-control at all. We are lazy, we are afraid of failing and it goes on and on and on. Blah, Blah, Blah. My favorite one actually was this. No one really knows the reason why we do it. Ha!!! There ya go.

However, like a dog with a bone I can not let something go once I have taken a bite. So I decided to take a positive look at this so called dilemma. Thought there might be a ying to the yang. I really gave it my all to come up with some ideas as to all the positive aspects of procrastination. I even did some goggling to see if I was not alone in my thoughts. The point in all this was to, well, give us a break. Since we only have 24 hours in each day, how do we choose to spend that time. How can we better embrace something that has given us such a bad rap.

In ancient Greek and Roman times procrastination was respected with awe. The wise leaders would sit and think and really do anything unless it was completely necessary. During the Puritan times things started to change. It was now considered a "sin of folly" and unfortunately it has not changed. Those thoughts remain to this day.

Below you will find some interesting points and you will be delighted at the results. If anyone has more to add be my guest.

  1. It lets you decide and set your own pace. So in fact you do have control over the situation.

  2. You can set your own priorites.

  3. Procrastination leads to creativity.

  4. Procrastination can give you better clarity on some important subjects you have been thinking about.

  5. Unnecessary tasks tend to dissappear when you procrastinate.

  6. It gives you guilt free time off from endless chores and your to do list.

  7. It calms our impulses so we don't act in haste

I am sure we can all think of many many more, however these do touch on a few positive points. If you however have a feeling your procrastination is really taking over in areas where it should not be, there are several areas you could address.

  1. Pinpoint your fear!

  2. Stop being a perfectionist and become an optimist

  3. Envision the completion of tasks. Imagine your free mind and what you can do with your time off.

Now get out there and get all your chores done and everything on your to do list.

Then get yourself over to the beach.

ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY!!!!!

NAMASTE

You make me feel great about procrastinating :-) Thanks for sharing! upvoted and resteemed. Hows that for an ego boost?

grinning from ear to ear..thank you and nice to meet you on this platform

Nice to meet you as well!

I recently came across a TED talk that discussed how procrastination can actually lead to being more creative and I was so excited to see that you had included it here. I find that procrastinating actually helps me gather my thoughts and determine how to move forward with something; however, only to a certain point. If I fall into procrastinating too much it just becomes stressful. Thanks so much for sharing. BTW, I am a curator with @ocd and would love to nominate your post.

WOW!!! Awesome, thank you so much and yes. I did put that tag. Does it matter where in the list of 5 tags it occurs. I love TED talks so much. I do find I am most creative when I leave my chores and my to do list behind. I also have the delightful pleasure to live on the Ocean. That is where I leave absolutely everything that has to be done behind me and where my creative juices really shine. I am so glad you enjoyed my post. I am following you now. I am thrilled to be part of the OCD community. Namaste

No need to use the tag this time around since I will be nominating your post for potential inclusion in our daily compilation post, but definitely use it in future posts :) Where the tag falls in the five available doesn't matter we just recommend not using it as the first tag since that first tag really should pertain to the subject matter. Thanks for replying back so quickly!

Its raining so very hard. What better thing to do then Steemit. I can leave my chores till later. :))) thank you again

I’m all for procrastination. For all the reasons you’ve mentioned. The best explanation I’ve heard for why we procrastinate was that we tend to do so when we are lacking all the information required to complete a task. It’s an evolutionary benefit, as you are more likely to fail disastrously if acting on impulse without all the risks, tools, and parameters needed to navigate the job properly. If my todo list becomes too cluttered, I take long breaks of contemplation to ease my nerves and focus better on the next task.

Yes...which is why I run and go to the beach, plus I think no matter how far away we escape and move to stillness there is so much to take care of. Just our new world as it is. I wonder how many things were on a Caveman's list, other than what he ate in his Paleo diet and whether or not he should just draw a picture on the cave wall. Thanks for responding

Kick butt post @marionbowes! I'd say your best yet xoxo I'm glad you didn't procrastinate in making this haha, great timing and I hope a lot of folks read this and let out a big sigh...ahhh...it's okay to be a #hotmess!

hee..thank you darlink...I think many folks will appreciate this. In the end its what we choose to do.I am sure Michelangelo had a messy house. How many genius folk have all their ducks in a row.? I try...............its a wonderful facade for whats really going on.
