The SS America was a luxurious ocean liner of the United States Lines shipping company built in 1940. It was the largest passenger ship in the United States of its time. It had many names from its construction to its shipwreck in 1994. At 49 meters in length less than the RMS Titanic, it was one of the largest and most luxurious ships in North America.
In 1993, in the Greek port of Piraeus, the ship was out of service due to the poor condition of its machines; his repairs were onerous with respect to the value of the ship. In 1993 it was bought by a Thai shipowner for two million dollars to convert it into a luxury floating hotel in Bangkok; for it, it was again renamed as American Star. For its transfer it was taken in tow by a Ukrainian ocean tug.

It suffered a strong storm on January 15, 1994 in the Canary Islands, when it was towed by the Ukrainian ship Neftegaz 67, with its propellers already dismantled and placed on the deck. Due to the storm and negligence, the tug cut the cable and the American Star was left adrift. Three days later, after several disagreements between the interests involved, the ship ran aground on the beach of Garcey, municipality of Pájara, on the west coast of Fuerteventura. 48 hours later - while the owners, the tugboat company and the insurer argued without agreeing on what action should be taken - the ship was broken in two by the sea.
On July 6 the total loss of the ship was declared. When the Civil Guard withdrew the siege was victim of looting by the locals, which were made with all kinds of items and accessories. The shipwreck was a real tourist attraction.
After splitting in half, the stern half sank definitively into the ocean. The other half, the bow, remained on the recognizable beach and was known as a ghost ship. In 2007, the bow was definitely destroyed.
