Interesting facts about Madrid

in #life7 years ago

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the city. According to one of them, Madrid - comes from the Arabic "majer-it", which means "a deep spring". The first settlers of Madrid were the Moors. In 927, the city was laid as a Moorish fortification, and is mentioned in the chronicles under the name of Maharit.

Spain became the capital of Spain in 1561 under King Philip II, before the main city of the country was Valladolid. The city was chosen by the king as the seat of the royal court for purely pragmatic reasons and even from a whim. It was just a small village, however, well located between two big cities - Toledo and Segovia. It was advantageous for the King to weaken these cities, especially Toledo, which was ruled by rich and powerful archbishops. In Madrid, neither the aristocracy nor the church had much influence. That is why Madrid is also called the "Deliberate City". Currently, more than 3 million people live in Madrid.

Madrid is located exactly in the center of Spain. On the Puerta del Sol square there is a monument of the zero kilometer, from here the countdown of the main roads of the country begins. The weather forecasters say that there are more sunny days in the Spanish capital than in any other European city. There are about 250 sunny days per year. Madrid is the highest mountain in Europe. It is located at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level. On Sundays from March to October, the city hosts famous bullfighting, attracting tourists from all corners of the world. In Madrid there is even the Museum of the Fight of Bulls. One of his exhibits is the costume of a young bullfighter Manolete, who was killed by bulls to death. Spain is rightly considered the birthplace of many brave navigators. But the capital itself is far from the sea - about 300 kilometers.

In the Spanish capital, there are more than 70 different museums, although there is not a single historical and cultural structure on a world scale! Madrid is the only city in Europe where there is a monument to the devil, located in the Retiro Park. El Angel Caido ("The Fallen Angel") by Ricardo Belver tells the story of the expulsion of Lucifer from paradise. Madrid football club "Real" is named the greatest football team in the world in the 20th century. "Real" is also the world's richest club: its budget currently stands at more than 900 million euros. And the matches of two irreconcilable rivals, "Real" and "Barcelona", are one of the most important sporting events in the country. Do not be surprised if Madrid greets you with two kisses on the cheek, this is a normal way to welcome people in Madrid

An interesting fact: the city still operates a municipal code of laws, adopted in 1948. In this arch there are a number of very interesting prohibitions. It is forbidden to block tram tracks. At the same time, the trams themselves, like the roads, have long since disappeared from the streets of the city. Coal workers are forbidden to return home in work clothes. By the way, this ban has not lost its relevance: on the outskirts of the city, houses have been preserved, where they are still burning coal. Only in the 21 century the decree to the owners of guard dogs was abolished. According to this decree, only males could be guardians, and not less than 6 months. Recently, discrimination "by age and sex" was abolished. Know more facts about Madrite? Write to us in the comments, we will publish them!

Very informative and cool information about Madrid. I knew about the moorish rule and therefore it's influence on Spain. However the fact that Madrid derived it's name from arabic and that it was a Moorish town was interesting. Lots of other interesting stuff. Thanks
