Generation Rent UK - & why i want to live in a motorhome

in #life6 years ago (edited)

For some time I have been doing all I can to save for a motorhome for me and my fiancee to live in - This is quite unusual and not the "done thing" but in this post I will explain why we want to go down this route.

For generations if you worked hard you have been able to have the comfort and security of owning your own home..As the old saying goes "your home is your castle" a place to grow a family and make happy memories, a place to lay down roots and connect with your community.

But in this day and age everything in the UK has changed..

Due to many factors from unchecked immigration to the spiralling cost of living - owning your own home is no longer viable unless you earn over 50k per year. So what does everyone do? they live with family or they rent.

It is now predicted that over a third of 30 year olds today will be still renting when they retire - renting is all well and good when you are young enough to work to pay the rent but what about when you are to old to work..What then?

Paying rent from a pension will not be viable and we will have a SERIOUS problem with poverty and homelessness to the likes of what we have never seen.

There is also one major problem with renting (apart from its expensiveness) you have no security...You can be moved on at short notice if your landlord sells..You can have your rent raised..How can you lay down roots when the future is so uncertain? you just cant..

So for us we will take a different route. We will save for a motorhome and live from it, we will lay down routes and network within the motorhoming community. we may not have the four sturdy walls around us that a rented house provides but what we will have - our van - will be ours. Our home that no one can make us leave.

And when we are old and infirm and can no longer manage the drive - We will be in the same boat as the other people who have had the missfortune of renting their whole lifes.

Enjoy life every day - make the most of your youth and live life to the full when you can. Because for "generation rent" sadly the long term future is very bleak.

Owning your own home comes with its perils aswell. You don't own it the bank does up until u make that last payment..plus the cost of repairs falls squarely on the "home owner" Good luck my friend!

That is very true, and its a point me and christina have often spoke about actually - even if we could afford a house could we afford to maintain it? if a roof tile blew of in the wind or the boiler broke down could we afford that? we came to the conclusion that with council tax, bills and everything else there is just no way.

I have nothing against home owners and no jealousy, and to those that can im really pleased for, my sister managed to do it - I just think its a sad state of afairs that so many now have to rent. But to be fair owning your own home is not a god given right.

A motorhome will of course need maintenance and upkeep, but we believe it will be vastly lower.
