House of Raminten

Yogyakarta, a small province in Indonesia known for its historical sites and stories, offers an engrossing experience of heritage cuisine.I personally never doubt that. Having to live in the area for three years, I am often astonished to find hidden gems of traditional cuisines. And for those of you who want to experience traditional culinary experience with high end service, look no further than House of Raminten.

Located about two minutes away from the main busy road of Yogyakarta, this place is easy to locate. If you hop on a public transportation, they will most likely know the place. Although it is preferred to use online transportion or your own vehicle.

Upon arrival, visitors will be greeted with welcome board in five different languages, dim lights and waiting bench. Not only but also, in the main room, you will see two miniatures of royal chariot and a statue of the owner dressed in a traditional garments.

The atmosphere is compelling enough for those who wander through south east asia. For instance, the waiter and waitress are wearing traditional garment and full make up. It was as if visitors were treated like royals. Also, the gamelan sound surrounding the place and the smell of aromatic offerings will accompany your dining experience.

The restaurant consists of three floors, with the first being an open space surrounded with little garden and a small statue of jesus. The rest are normal floor seating area. My friend and I were lucky and not so lucky to be seated next to a round granite bath tub. We were unfortunate because next to the spot we were seated was a horse stall.

The menu in this restaurant is as unique as its atmosphere. As you can see from the picture below, there is a rice served in a bamboo plate. Also there's a milk served in a breast like cup.Price wise, it's very affordable. That is why most family come to this place and do a celebration or a little reunion.

In this restaurant, after you order from the menu, you have to pay directly to the waitress then you have to wait until your food arrives. It won't take long enough, so you don't have to worry.

As a starter we ordered a crispy corn fritters. It looks appealing although the portion was too small for both of us. It's hot, crispy and not oily that was something we like about it.

Then, as the main course, I ordered a soup filled with meatballs, fish sticks, vegetables and mushrooms. Whilst my friend ordered stir fry vegetables. As an extra, I also ordered a small portion or rice with sambal(spicy sauce) and fried tempeh.

For less than 2$ it was filling enough. I didn't expect the soup portion to be that much. So, I shared it with my friend and basically giving the meatballs and fish sticks to her.

We didn't order any drinks because we brought our own from home. It was good that we didn't get fined or anything because some restaurants have a strict policy about it.

The main starter was good enough. Although the vegetables tastes cold. It takes sometime for the pot to heat up all the ingredients. Then my friend ordered a banana with fla on top. I didn't get to taste it but it looks appealing enough. In the end, we spent about 4$ and our small wooden table looked full. I really recommend to visit this place and order the most unique meal which you've not eaten before. It's cheap, the portion is big, and the service is outstanding. Truly a royal dining experience.
