My Friend, Emmanuel
While I was in Florida for school, I had the opportunity to visit the home office of the Rafiki Foundation. It was one of those experiences where you meet people that are focused on the same problems in the world that you are.
Rafiki has 10 orphanages in 10 different countries within Africa. In total, 847 orphans are in their care, and only a handful of those have graduated a college or university.
The young man you see in the picture is Emmanuel. He captured my heart about 5 years ago, and I’ve been supporting him ever since. We enjoy writing letters back and forth, and it has been amazing to watch him grow in maturity in such a short time.
The unique nature of Rafiki and their methodology is what drew me to their ministry. They focus on a classical education for the children, and look for their trade or entrepreneurial gifts. They are raising stewards who manage the fish pond, and know how to fish.
Whenever I watch movies like Blood Diamond, I am reminded of why supporting Emmanuel and the goals of Rafiki are so important.
****There is a saying that goes along with the acronym T.I.A. - it means This Is Africa.***
Every time I hear that it inspires me to work harder, and keep to the journey before me. My life is not my own, and there are people depending on me to help them change their world.
T.I.A. exists because there is so much work to be done in Africa. However, the large amount of work does not give us the excuse to be apathetic. As for me and my house, we work for a better Africa, day by day.
