Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, nothing is perfect – So let's catch up.
...let's just sit, and have some tea.
Some people have a meditation practice, for me it's the way of tea, or cha dao*, I haven't written much about my tea practice, but perhaps I will devote more time to this topic in coming posts as I'm recently rekindling my love of sharing tea.
12 days ago I set out to write a bit of a rant that has been kicking around in my head, but instead, I ended up writing a prelude to the rant I really wanted to deliver, and indicating I would soon deliver its conclusion. Well fear not, that rant is still brewing... In the meanwhile, however, let me not flounder in the vastness of all things.
I am not a specialist.
Though sometimes I envy them! – Can you imagine, bending the whole of your existence towards the pursuit of perfection in a single art or science? Amazing... I am way more of a generalist, there is so much to explore! For me what is so rewarding is discovering where the different disciplines connect, how synergies occur between them, and how they fit together to create a whole picture.
So one thing I have always been somewhat perplexed by with respect to writing here on Steemit is that I have such a wide array of interests, I often find myself trying to imagine my readers going from posts about blockchain, to travel, to musings on tea, videos, or storytelling, and wherever my curious muse leads me. Being that inspiration strikes when it will, on each particular topic, and sometimes in the most inscrutable sequence... it's a mystery even to myself how so many interests and ideas can simultaneously inhabit one mind!
My eighth-grade creative writing teacher would often say "better done than perfect", which is still some of the best advice I could possibly imagine... especially for the latent perfectionist.
That same advice comes to us from the idea of Wabi Sabi, which @darkb4dawn reminded me of during a conversation we were having the other day.
"Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."
–Richard R Powell, Wabi Sabi Simple
I hope you find that as comforting as I do.
It's a reminder that gives me permission to proceed in my explorations with courage, good faith, and not worry about writing or expressing the perfect thing... for whatever I do is subject to these three simple realities. I figure that's either really terrifying or really liberating, depending on your perspective. For me, it's most definitely liberating. What do you think?
Some updates
So, almost two weeks ago, after some hijinks with the airport, my beloved @wolfcat set off on her adventure to bike around Cuba! I hope she is having an amazing time and taking great photos...! Since she's been gone I've been picking up the pieces of my current nomadic existence and contemplating what's next for me.
I've been travelling pretty much non-stop since September, and now back in Minnesota, I finally have a chance to let the mud settle a little bit.
Thoughts of roaming off to Moab, or Seattle, or Northern California to visit friends keeps coming back to me, but recent indications point more strongly that I should stay put, and pay attention! So for the moment, I will work on that.
+ While I was in Colombia, all my camera gear was stolen.
I know you're probably thinking, well of course... Colombia. But that's not how it went down.
I left all my gear behind in Minneapolis, because I didn't want the huge camera slowing @wolfcat and I down, and it was meant to be more of a vacation with Spanish lessons and yoga instead of video production. Well long story short, my Canon c300 and lens, + audio recorder, mic, etc... Stolen out of a friends car in Minneapolis. :| They smashed the window and took everything while he was inside a cafe for 15 minutes.
Well, it's mostly been covered by my renter's insurance, thank heavens, but I still haven't replaced the camera, or any of the gear... it was such an undertaking putting all that together to begin with. No, for now I'm planning to finish editing up the footage I do have, and then think about the new camera in a bit here.
I have two interviews in the works... one with @shla-rafia, and one with @wolfcat.... both filmed while we were in Portugal.
There's so much more to be said... but I have to turn my attention towards a few other urgent matters right now.
Before I sign off for the moment though I just want to say...
My serious respect
to the pioneers of fortune
who daily ply their skilful imaginings
in the full-tilt attention economy
of the Steem ecosystem.
And a very special shout-out to @kommienezuspadt
...for outpacing me to 3,000 followers by a landslide, and being a fount of creative energy around which the Caffetto incubator here in Minneapolis fairly hums. We had a little friendly rivalry going, just for the sport of it... but he's just soooo prolific! I think, let's set the goalpost at 5,000 for the next round... ;) You know, just to give me a chance to figure out what I'm doing here.. :P
I wish you all a wonderful day!
Take some time for tea, and don't forget to breathe!
Peace, and @lovejoy
*edit: gongfu cha (tea prepared with skill & leisure) replaced with cha dao (the way of tea)
My teacher in Japan has emphasized wabi sabi to me many times. And his teacing is all about flow. We stop the flow any time we self censor. I still have much to learn, but I appreciate your ideas about gongfu cha!
Always learning. I use gongfu cha to refer to the practice, but I'm hinting at cha dao... however, that's not something I want to try and write about right now. ;) I'm more oriented in the Chinese tradition... but I have a great respect for Japanese tea. I'm really enjoying the positive response to tea around here.
Do you study the Japanese tea ceremony then?
Lovely post @lovejoy. You and I met last summer I think, at @timcliff's pizza get together in Edina. I remember telling you I was interested in steemit for the opportunity to write. Then promptly didn't write for several months. Writing now though, and loving it. I have the same generalist's question you do (what am I doing here?) but chose a particular topic (food) and started there. Its going well and I'm having fun getting back into writing.
Quick note on the advice you cited. "Done is better than perfect" has long been the mantra of the quilting community. I learned it there and never looked back. Blessings on you and your tea.
Heya @ducksaplenty! Glad to see you here and know that you made your leap into some consistent writing on Steemit, that's a feat! I think it's too late for me to just pick a topic and go with it... since like 20 years now.. lol, but that's ok. I'm adapting. I'm getting more comfortable with a conversational approach to writing on Steemit, which should help me considerably. Thanks for your lovely comment!
And PS, I knew I liked quilters... they know what's up!
Wabi-sabi is a true spirit of japanese tea ceremony in which simplicity, imperfection and joy of the moment are foundation of tea gathering.
I love how Thích Nhất Hạnh described meaning of tea:
Thích Nhất Hạnh puts it so well... Thanks for sharing this! =)
My finest Dragonwell (Lung Ching) tea for your beautiful comment to an inspired post.
Follow follow follow!
I hope your ritual of drinking and sharing tea will last for a very long time!
I love sharing coffee at home :)
Thanks! =) Me too.. I'll try to write more on the topic of sharing tea.
Nothing wrong with a good cuppa coffee either. ;) Cheers.
Great advise. "nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect." The only constant is change... As a suffering perfectionist, your post has brought a breath of easement. Thanks. Also, I know the feels: interesting in all directions, too much out there to specialize in one. The mind, curious for all, rambling thoughts in all directions. Sorry to hear about the camera. The more I'd like to trust and believe people are generally good, often I am shown otherwise.
I've been favoring yerba mate as of late. I need to brew my own and just take the time to enjoy it, and not chug it out of a can so much.
I am so sorry to hear your gear was stolen. I've been super wary about leaving even my shoes in the car or something.
I like yerba mate but it makes me kinda crazy... It really helps me to free-associate, and it's wonderfully energizing... There is an interesting relative of yerba mate, that grows along the South-Eastern coast of the US called Yaupon, have you heard of it? -- And yeah, I don't normally leave my items in cars... but alas, sometimes that's just the way it goes.
I totally understand... sometimes it really is just what it is! But I'm also extra distrustful because I live in a neighborhood with a lot of car break-ins. :(
I haven't heard of Yaupon, but would definitely like to try! I guess I should really try to just have a day to sit down, start it with Mate, and see where my thoughts take me! I'm always on the run for some reason to truly notice its effects. :D
Cool, yeah in those neighbourhoods, i tend to leave nothing visible in my car and sometimes leave the doors unlocked so no one bothers to break the window.
Well, I'll put you and @ghostfish on my shortlist of invites for when @tealounge gets started up. :) I think it will be great to get local Steemians together on a somewhat regular basis for tea, mate, whathaveyou!
I am super excited for that!!! I love coffee a lot, but we already have enough coffee shops, and want to try more tea. It may reduce my anxiety. hahahaha. Thank you so much for thinking of us, for sure! :D
I would love to have silent tea with you~
I know what its like to have camera gear stolen.
Yet this post was a drawing into your life, and your gratefulness.
L
Thanks for your words. :) Maybe we will have tea one day! You never know.
So many ups and downs, but it's hard to not be grateful.
wow que hermoso tu post....
de todas tus imagenes me quedo con esta sobre todo por la hermosa porcelana y el delicioso té que ahhi se ve..
Muchas gracias! =)
@ vos hombre por compartir excelente articulo
Meandering through very different topics like direct quotation of thought is perhaps what makes an author an interesting read.
Look forward to the next post, rant, spec sheet or cup of Tea. Greetings!
Such a great way to put that... I aspire to something like this. :)
Thanks for the good words! Cheers.
I am a generalist as well however work to perfect only certain things. Indeed there are so many subjects to pursue on Steemit . Getting it done is definitely more important than perfecting it as perfection is NEVER achieved. There is always another dimension you discover...something else to make it more perfect AFTER you think you are done. No end to it. LOL Thanks for the article.
So true.. so true. No end to it... Thanks for making my head spin a bit more in light of the infinite conundrum that is perfection. ;)
