Stage Fright: I Don't Know Anymore What It Is.

in #life8 years ago

You are waiting for your turn to speak up in front of the people who are completely unknown to you, just five more minutes and you will speak or perform in front of the people, and there it happens, your palms are sweaty, heart racing and you are gasping. This has happened with me multiple times, and I know most of you have suffered this too.

While talking to @vangelov who is an alchemist, a philosopher, an avid psychology reader and an artist, we decided to share our experiences with everyone how we get over stage fright.

So before sharing our solution, first let's get to the bottom of the problem.

Why does stage fright happen?

Does it happen because of unpreparedness?

Or because you don't have much experience talking in front of the people?

But people who have prepared for weeks and been performing in front of people for years still face stage fright.

The reason is simple and psychological. The most common reason except genetics is your reputation and importance.

You are nervous to speak in front of people because you fear to lose your reputation and importance by giving a bad performance in front of them.

Now the most common reasons we cover up our fear of losing our reputation are:

1. We will forget what to say in front of the people.

2. Our audience knows more than us, and they will point out our mistakes.

3. Our audience is not interested in listening to us.

These are the fears that always come to my mind before speaking up in front of a group or on a stage, and if these are the same reasons you are scared of, we both are lucky, the solution is quite easy which has been tried and worked on thousands of people.

What I do is, I always go in front of the people with a smile on my face and look for the happiest face in the audience. A person who is as happy as I am and smiling and interested in listening to me.

Once I find that person, I concentrate on him for a few minutes till I get comfortable with everyone else.

Then all I have to do is to keep everyone away from getting bored.

Some people also get anxious because they think that the people they will address are more intelligent and have more knowledge than they have. I used to feel like that too. Then I figured that if everyone has come to listen to me, there must be something I can tell them which I know better than others. And I can also explain them things they already know in a better way, or in my way, in a different way than how the world see everything.

I have applied this formula in every aspect of my life while dealing with people, whether it be a small meeting, speaking in front of some people or a large audience, or writing an article which people from all over the world will read.

This is my solution for getting over stage fright.

Now let's hear the solution of an alchemist/philosopher. You need to concentrate on this as it has a pretty deep meaning and when I got it, I was stunned by its meaning.

We all had that moment, be it presenting in front of our class in the school or speaking in a meeting, we are shivering when the golden moment comes, to speak our mind.

I've been through these moments in my life, observing how the mental weight gathers before the moment comes, like an inevitable scenario where you are a victim of your own doings, yet knowing they are worth every effort you've made.

Stage fright can be referenced towards social anxiety, yet there are different kinds of social anxiety, so we shall be looking at it as a standalone soul phenomenon.

Let's look into this more deeply.

A person can be split into two equally important segments which are known as Introversion and extroversion. Our inner voice is the one we deal with on a personal level, the one that goes hand in hand with emotions in a more deeper dimension; and, our external representation is derived from the balanced aspects of the internal self.

To make things more clear, I will ask you to visualize a sketch so you can imagine the whole process. We have one bubble that is filled with liquid, the bubble is in contact with a filtering wall, this bubble is your inner self. That liquid contains all of your emotions, thoughts and notions.

The filter is the gate which filters them out so they may be better understood by others. After the liquid transfers through the bubble, it goes to a second bubble, which is our extroverted representation of our inner dimensions.

Now in most cases, our inner dimensions are way bigger than our outer ones, so that's why we have the filter, this filter slows our expression speed, but allow us to refine our interactions to more equally understood ones. The outer bubble keeps only that, which can be transformed into crystal structures which are segments of our overall psyche.

By the process mentioned above, we can see the issue with stage fright.

The inner dimensions are in a state of flux, having to take in mind so many people, which means our filter needs to refine the liquid into something acceptable for all of them. A massive amount of liquid needs to be poured out and it clogs the filters because it can't be refined, thus leading to a high pressure in the inner bubble, bleeding out through its walls in the forms of anxiety.

When this happens everything clogs up and we need to wait till the pressure drops and the liquid stops bleeding out.

There are numerous ways to refine our bubbles and filter, yet that requires a vast amount of practice which can only be fitted in a standalone soul.

Nice article flow. It was always nerves and a racing heart for me in the ten minutes before I actually start to speak, triggered by fear that I would forget to say what I needed to say (the number one reason you listed above)..once I opened my mouth, I was normally fine.. lol

Well, nobody is perfect, but you seem very close to being perfect.

Lol..the charm..again!

Nice to see you posted the article so quick 👀. Also thanks for the awesome introduction ^^. Awesome that you covered the basics at the beginning which i forgot to have a look at, really adds to the flow :)

Also your method is quite nice, focusing on a single target shuts out the stutter in the background.

All thanks to you, I haven't written anything since a week, I am starting to write now regularly.

Can't wait to see what comes out :)

Great topic Thanks for sharing

I used to have the same issue during my school days. Each individual have to find its own solution to overcome fear. For me it is "F**k the audience, let them think what they want".

haha, quite rash, but maybe it works on you. Every individual has his own set of ways to work things out.

hahaha... Stage fright is the worst. Apparently people fear public speaking more than death. Every time i got in front of a crowd to speak I would always freak out. That reduces a bit the more you put yourself out there. Sometimes when you are speaking from a place of authority, the anxiety can be a little less, unless it's the first time you are doing it.

UPVOTED.
very good.
I would be happy if you like to follow me and give your opinion about my posts.
Thanks.

I'm very grateful I came across your article post coz I need this one. You see, I always have a stage fright. I hate speaking in front of a big audience coz of number 2. (Our audience knows more than us, and they will point out our mistakes.) I feel like they will scrutinize me, bully me and make fun of me.

But lately, I did a special project where I tried to overcome that fear by interviewing strangers. :-) I know it's different from having an audience, but it still feels like I'm talking to an audience. At first I was shy, people will say no. But as time goes on, I build more power and become confident. Then once that happened, the game face is on!

You were right, gotta refine our bubbles. :-p
