Are You Smarter Than A Goldfish? Are You Sure?
I've seen article after article claiming that humans are less able, now,
than ever, to pay attention for any extended length of time.
So, are you smarter than a goldfish?
A recent marketing study by Microsoft has concluded that,
since the beginning of mass adoption of mobile internet usage,
the average attention span has dropped from 12 seconds to 8 seconds.
This is an attention span that is less than a that of a goldfish.
This, however, does not take into account the fact that,
humans are actually more intelligent than goldfish, most of us, anyway.
This statistic has been used for many sensational articles,
and for click bait headlines.
It got your attention to read this post, didn't it?
Goldfish, do not use computers, and could not even tie their shoes, if they had feet.
The point that needs to be made here,
is not that humans are becoming less intelligent than food.
The point to be made, is that humans, on average,
are becoming less able to hold a coherent thought, than we have been in the past.
Focus, concentration, and memory are on the decline, or hadn't you noticed?
These are abilities critical to our function as independent individuals.
Our competence to claim and maintain our rights
depend on our ability to understand them.
