Hyeopjae beach 협재해변, Jeju-do (제주도), South Korea's largest Island

in #life7 years ago

After spending a week in Seoul we spent quality time with my family in Busan, where my family (both mother and father's side) are from. Although there aren't as many things to see in Busan compared to Seoul, it has a special place in my heart as it is where my aunties, uncles and cousins all reside.

When we were in Busan my aunt (father's younger sister) urged my brother, my boyfriend and I to travel to Jeju-do for the weekend. It was somewhere my mother had spoken to us about often as it is where her and my father had their honeymoon and where most couples several decades ago did the same. It, therefore, has the nickname of the honeymoon island. It is a volcanic island and therefore is known for its beautiful landscapes, mountains and geographical components. We decided to give it a go and book planes and a hotel to spend 2 nights there.

The first evening we could not do much as most of the tourist attractions are closed around 18:00. The weather wasn't wonderful but good enough for us to explore Hyeopjae beach. You can see the location of the beach on the map below that I retrieved from http://lightkorea.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/your-bucket-lists-for-jeju-island_19.html. map_beaches.png

We walked along the beautiful beach until we reached an area with towers of black volcanic rock stacked on top of each other. My mother explained that people make a wish by addding to existing towers and therefore they are wish towers.

When the sun started to set we realised that the view was beautiful. There was something so calming about the shades of blue and the streak of pink in the horizon as well as the calming noise of the sea. It was so simple and yet so moving that I couldn't take my eyes off the view. As I dipped my feet into the warm water I hoped I would return to the exact spot once again in the future.
