6-year-old Learns To See A Project Through To The End.

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Yesterday, my daughter wanted to paint her rocking chair the color purple.

It was getting later in the evening and I asked her if she "would wait" until today. Her mother works at a hardware store, so I sent a text message and asked if she would pick up a small can of purple paint.

I love when the kids ask to do projects because they can usually turn into great learning lessons. When you homeschool, anything can turn into a lesson! This project not only helped with her coordination and imagination but it became a lesson of not quitting when you start something.

We started early in the morning because it's supposed to get really hot outside today in Tennessee. She got on her best painting clothes, we assembled our tools and quickly got to work.

We didn't have any sandpaper, so we used steel wool to give the chair a light sanding. I had my daughter do most of the work on this project, to include the sanding.

She was amazed at how much cleaner the chair became as we sanded it.

"This chair is a lot cleaner, don't you know it Daddy?"
"I know now".

This began the fun part! You can see the excitement on her face as she is opening up the paint can. She also had a new paintbrush for her project, which she loved.

"My new paintbrush is going to get dirty, don't you know it Daddy.?
"I know now."

This is about the time Lily wants to quit.

"Daddy, it's getting hot out here. I wanna go inside."
"Sweet heart, you wanted to do this project; right?"
"Yes, Daddy."
"What would happen if Daddy stopped working on the car in the middle of a project? Would we be able to go anywhere?"
"No, Daddy. Mommy wouldn't be happy either!"
"Ok, so you think you can motivate yourself to see your project through to the end?"
"Yes, Daddy."
"That's my girl!"

She goes on with her project and I could tell this conversation was still on her mind. She really wanted to stop.

"Wouldn't chocolate milk be really good right now, Daddy?"
"Yes, we'll get some chocolate milk when we are finished".
"But I haven't had my chocolate milk yet".

CRAP! BAD DADDY.

My daughter starts off her morning every day with a cup of chocolate milk. I started our day off so quickly, I forgot to get her milk. Justified break time.

After the well-deserved break, it was time to get back to work! This is about the time she tells me we should put the wet chair on the porch so her brother can sit in it. I am informed of the importance of the color purple for girls. She even starts to give me pointers on how one should paint! The break really helped lift her spirits and she saw the rest of the project through with a smile on her face!

Now it's time for cleanup and a well-deserved breakfast!

Awesome work you did on your chair Lily!
Bad Daddy - loved that part - what a great reward for a well deserved break, it worked out well.

It was a very well deserved break, lol. She absolutely loves the chair. That chair has had more use in the last few days than it has for the last year. Thanks for the compliment and I will be sure to tell her.

That's normally the way when they make it their own they will use it more.

If only I could turn that around to get them to clean after themselves more. Maybe we should make cleaning supplies, lol.

Well we made some homemade cleaning cream, the kids loved playing with it, that we said they could only play with it while cleaning the bathroom, worked only a few times. So you never know...

Nice. Homemade cleaning cream here I come.

That's very cool! Good for you that you convinced your little girl to see the job done. I bet she was very proud of herself!

Yes, she was very happy when it was finished and the first thing I asked her was if she was happy to have seen it through. I received a resounding Yes!

keep spirit little @lexikon082 u are great son in 6 years old and my friend dawg :D

Lol, this one was of my daughter who is 6. My son is 7!

Haha that my bad @lexikon082 i should remember that

Great job man, exactly what being a parent is all about.

Thanks for the compliment. We really try.

Awesome post, really enjoyed it :) a lot better way to learn something new, thanks for sharing #keepsteemin

Yes, the kids really love learning at home! I don't think they even realize half the time they are learning because they are having fun at it. Glad you enjoyed it!

Go, Lily! What a neat project!

Y'all did a great job and the chair looks awesome!

Thank's @aunt-deb! I will make sure to tell her you said she did a good job!

Cool! Purple is one of my favorite colors, too, by the way. Nice pick!

This is awesome! And Lily did a great job on her chair. You be sure to tell her Ms. Mare said that. XOXOX

I will. She loves to receive compliments. I've finally gotten her to say "Thank you" instead of "I know" when she receives them lol.

LOL! Kids!
My boys would get a whack upside the head for "I know." They eventually became the most polite kids at other people's homes. I was like errr?!? Can I have my good kids once in a while?

Lol, I had to explain to her that it was not polite to say that. She wasn't trying to be rude, is what makes it so funny. For example, someone would tell her she was pretty..."I know". horror. I had to come up with different analogies for the word conceded before she actually understood it. Now she gives the most polite "Thank you". Lol kids.

Politeness at other homes is their couisin. At home she is a wild child. Over here? Polite as can be.

This is so lovely. Cool to see your little girl complete her project. I learnt two things from this post. 1. When work gets too boring, take a short break. 2. Learn to complete your projects.

A great dad you are. 👍 @lexikon082.

I agree with you on number one also! When Number 1 happened, it was a lesson for me as a parent that I need to make sure the children get breaks when we are working.

Thanks for the compliment @ogoowinner!

You're welcome friend.
