How to help our elders overcome isolation

in #life11 days ago

Lockdown has brought attention to how lonely older people are. Even though some restrictions have been lifted, it is still important to keep in touch with friends and family during times of trouble. Whether you're with friends, family, or strangers, these tips will help them feel less lonely.

It makes sense to keep seniors in jail longer than other people because they are more likely to die from COVID-19, but the decision's side effects should not be ignored.

American researcher Brené Brown says that people are social creatures and that our need for touch is more than just an emotion. It's based in neuroscience. We were made to connect with each other, and being alone for long periods of time can be bad for our minds and bodies. Caroline Sauriol, executive director of the group Les Petits Frères, agrees that it can be hard to find meaning in life if we don't have anyone to share it with. Les Petits Frères has been fighting against the loneliness of people aged 75 and up in Quebec for almost 60 years.

Marie-Claude Boulet, a psychologist, says that even small actions like asking, "How are you?" or "What can I do?" can make a difference. Support can be emotional. To check in on someone, call or write them. Also, make sure you don't just talk about the current situation. "Of course, we'll talk about COVID," says Ms. Boulet. "But be sure to keep your tone reassuring, avoid sensationalism, and talk about other things."

Videoconferencing is better if it's possible. "You can see the other person smile on video." "The process works like a mirror and makes me feel good," the doctor says. You can also feel like you're sharing your daily life by eating a meal together or hearing about your kids' latest accomplishments.

Support can also be useful. People who are locked up can't get to as many programs. So we find out what they need. We can help with office work, go food shopping, or mow the lawn. Little things like these will make the other person's day better, and they will also make the person who does them feel good.

In addition to making us feel better, staying in touch with our elderly loved ones lets us know about their physical and mental health on a regular basis: "We can spot signs of potential problems." "We watch over them like a guard," says Ms. Boulet.
