Read your contracts!
After reading a rather friendly collection of threats from my manager in which he basically proposed making an obligation of an extra unpaid hour on weekend shifts and saying that I "owed" several hours, even though I have not been late more than once and now revising a general policy about break times... A veiled threat to dock my pay...
And none of this would have happened if he kept good faith about taking care to schedule properly, and to top it off I and another colleague are doing another 9 hours extra with no extra pay.
Sorry boss, but this is not what I signed up for and he knows very well there is 50 other employers in this town who would hire me also, under better conditions...
I thus have the option of compliance and submission to accept not just this month's extra 9 hours, but it sounds like he plans to dock me another 6 or so for my insubordination. Or I can just walk out now, leaving him even further short on staff and paving the way for more attrition.
I will still get paid something, maybe 300-400 leva at the end of the month. I can begin immediately hunting a new job, and probably have it in the bag in 2 weeks time, and just have to find some way to cover the expenses for the next month.
You know what? I am reading my contract through carefully now, establishing my risks, and certainly next time I am reading the contract carefully before I sign. But I think I am not going to work this full shift and I am not coming back.
Why should I bear the consequences of his poor management? I am cutting my losses. I know I can do better than this.
Doing good work for good people is a reward unto itself; doing good work for people who abuse that goodness is not. You didn't state the industry, but if there are other jobs out there, I would strongly consider a change.
IT outsourcing is the industry. It is huge business here in Sofia, and I am sure if all else fails I can manage to get another job elsewhere, but unfortunately from everything I have been told by people here, and not just colleagues, also random strangers involved in the business, this kind of putrid shit is very common. There is certainly an opening for new players to get started here, but I am very keen to go full agorist and forget about trying to interface with the moribund old school. We can do this other ways. There is so many people and so much money moving into this decentralised network that I don't see any need to depend on them anymore. We will make ourselves rich and the big tinkerers with this will push enough funds our way that we can really get some alt-economy going in a big way.
If you and some others found work elsewhere and timed your exit together, how much shit would hit the fan? If some others were on board, would the mere threat of silultaneous walk-outs give this manager pause to chill? Such tactics reek more than a little of unions but it sounds like this fucker has it coming.
There will be more walkouts very soon. I have been watching one colleague, a sympathetic and vivacious south african girl who is incredibly talented, slowly showing signs of fatigue at dealing with management at the job, I would almost bet money she is leaving within the next 4 weeks.
There is a small group of sycophants at the job too, I thought they were ok but the insults they have been dishing out to me to impress the boss makes me sick. I doubt whether the manager can gather enough of these yes men to keep his business afloat. My conversation with my fellow night shift colleague made it pretty clear that he is also got in the back of his mind an exit very soon.
Maybe this pig can keep enough people to justify his existence, maybe not. I don't care to know, although I would love to be a fly on the wall to watch when it does evenutally go down in flames.
I am not interested in organising an attack against this pig, he is fucking himself hard enough without my energy being wasted unproductively destroying him. I did make a small effort to make it known to a nice and relatively honest, and perhaps the least sycophantic of his little gaggle how wrong what he is doing is, but that's as far as I go. I am even going to shut down every means by which this pig can contact me. I want nothing more to do with him. He has proven well enough he only wants to polish his ego at my expense.
