America's Oldest Car Collection

The Larz Anderson Auto Museum, in Brookline, MA (USA) is "America’s Oldest Car Collection". The creation of the Larz Anderson Museum stemmed from their Sunday tradition of Larz and Isabel Anderson welcoming wealthy socialites at their Brookline, Massachusetts home. They would open the spectacular Carriage House (pictured above) and share their continuously growing collection of unique American and European vehicles. This practice then led t open the doors each Sunday to the general public where and has continued for 85 years.

The Anderson's purchased an automobile every year, of which they acquiring a thirty-two brand new motorcars fourteen of which, and along with original horse-drawn carriages, remain in the permanent collection.

In 1897, Larz and Isabel were married and living a life of luxury, political post as well as philanthropy. They split their time between their lavish mansion in; Washington, D.C. (now owned and operated by the Society of the Cincinnati), the summer retreat located in New Hampshire, and this sprawling estate in Brookline, MA. Their Brookline estate is now home to both a vast public park run by the Town of Brookline and the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

Their Porsche exhibit... Some real beauties

I am a Porsche fanatic and why I originally went, but the wonderful collection was quite amazing as was the estate, carrige house and other exhibit. They also had a BMW exhibit hall as a part of the collection along with the vast array of unique older automobiles above.

But I learned more that day...

The Handlebar Mustache

The Handlebar Mustache was fashioned after the handlebars of this type of bicycle (also in their collection).

Header

You know that old expression; "Take a Header", well that too came from these bikes as there were often many people flying over those handlebars... some even with their mustaches of the same ilk.

Such nice vehicles!! I would like to try to ride that header bike, what a craziest one! I would certainly hurt myself in the process!
