The Logic of Water

Ideas from Water Logic

Inspired by Edward de Bono

As we all know a rock is a hard non moving object, rigid in all aspects including it's appearance, while water is soft and always flowing and changing in form and appearance, yielding yet relentless.

Rock

Now the rock may be used to attack or defend as it is strong, but it just really sits where it is never wandering, exploring or growing. A rock has definite shape and characteristics, it does not adapt to it's environment it sits in either resistance or acceptance. As it just sits, it is either in a location or it is not, as if you have a rock in a bucket and tilt the bucket it will fall out and if you add another rock, you then have two, but they do not join or work in unison. A rock just is.

'Sad to think how much harm has been caused by the brutal arrogance of rock logic' - Dudley Herschbach, Nobel Prize, Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University. This quote was made casually in a personal letter to me. I asked Professor Herschbach if I could use it as a quote because it embraces so much in a simple sentence.

Water

If you attack water it offers no resistance but then engulfs and drowns an attacker. When you pour water on to a surface it spreads out as if to explore and if there a slight incline water just flows. Water has no definitive shape as it always adjusts to the environment or container. With water you can release some water from the same bucket as the rock once shared, but still retain some in the bucket. Water does not have to be either/or... it is what the environment, time, situation warrants. And if you add water to water you will not get two waters rather it combines with the old to become more.

Compared to us

When we use these two substances to look at human thinking, we see that rock logic is either or and often concerned with the 'but' as well as difference. Whereas water logic is best described as 'and' thought, as we think how the inputs add up to a whole.

The rock thinkers are constrained to what it is or what is not, compared to the water thinker who considers how things flow, lead to or add up to. And so it is in our world, be it in work, relationships, health practices (natural or scientific), permeating all we do as a rock or water.

We are all rocks at some point in our lives. However, life is a harsh teacher and grinds us rocks, into dust so we can be more like water... it takes a lifetime. - Rob Frappier

Amazing and great logic of water shared by you. ☺
Nice philosophy and brilliant content.

Thanks for sharing this post.

Have a wonderful day!

Great thinking there and beautifully explained with that example nice post :)

Great analogy. The idea of fluidity or malleability fits perfect in this ever changing fast-paced world. It makes more sense for people and organizations to be ready and willing to change, instead of stubbornly just sitting in.

It is typical to the methods of the softer Martial Styles as well as negotiators... so many take the hard stance though. In today's fast moving world the rock is obsolete before they get started.

fallow back dear
