Chocolate Hills in the Philippines

Although not edible or even "chocolate", Chocolate Hills in the Philippines are a fascinating natural phenomenon that consists of about 1.260 hills on one plain. All hills have a similar shape, and vary in height ranging from 30 to 120 meters.

Most of the year, Chocolate Hills are bright green, but during the dry season the grass is dried, effectively transforming them into brown dome. When viewed from the height, this large ravine suddenly gets the look of a box of tasty candy bars. Deservedly, Chocolate Hills are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Philippines.

Despite a large number of hills, it is still unclear how they formed. There are more geological explanations, from ocean volcanic activity, to the "expense" of hills due to weather conditions. The latest theory is that the ancient volcano exploded and its pieces were scattered across the region.

Like any other natural phenomenon, Chocolate Hills follow many legends. One legend says giant bison destroys this region, destroying all crops. In order to revive them, the locals left behind corrupt crops, causing them to bake. All bisones left the region and left behind a pile of feces due to illness.

The second legend goes like this: two goblins throwing stones one to another. Soon they became tired and became friends and left the area, forgetting to clear up the mess they had created. The second version of this story, a giant fall in love with a mortal who died. Devastated, a giant cry, and huge tears dropped from his eyes, the tears that later formed the hills.

This natural phenomenon is located in Bohol, a region that is so proud of it that they have pointed to the hills and their provincial flag. However, since the inhabitants of Bohola can not actually eat chocolate from the hills, the space between each hill is used to grow rice and other agricultural goods.

The region is under the protection of the Philippine government, and the application for the inclusion of Chocolate Hills in UNESCO World Heritage is under way.
