Chand Baori, the most beautiful and most unusual well in India

According to local legends, this incredible well from Chand Baori in Abhaneri village, eastern Rajasthan, India built ghosts for one night, and this legend of ghosts was created to keep away the thieves who would like to steal precious water.

Truth is that Chand Baori was built in the 9th century on the orders of Ray Chand, the deceased (Dolsley, the son of King) of the ruling Chaman dynasty, to solve the water problems in this dry area. The locals had to dig nearly 30 feet deep to find the water source.

An unusual geometric structure, incorporating 3.500 steps descending to the 13-story deck, is designed to allow locals to access water at all times of the year and all over the world, and the "mouth of the well" also served as an excellent rain collector.

Apart from keeping water, Chand Baori has also become a gathering place for locals. The residents often sat and talked with each other , and when was very hot they were getting near bottom as the bottom was 5-6 degrees cooler than the top.

Stairs surround three sides of the well, while the fourth side has a number of pavilions. The side of the pavilions has niches with beautiful sculptures and even royal residences with rooms for the king and queen and the stage for performances.

Water in the well is now covered with green algae and is no longer drinkable, but its structure will forever remain part of the great archaeological treasures of India.
