RE: Teach your children survival skills

in #life8 years ago

What a great read and so refreshing to see others with a similar point of view to my own.
We are an 'average' family from England and 4 years ago we were in EXACTLY the same frame of mind so decided to sell as much as we could and just keep the basics, hit the road and find somewhere where we could build a new future. A future where we could 'start a fresh'.
Everything went well for a start, it was fantastic, freedom at last! :) It wasn't too long before we started to notice the cracks though. When I say 'cracks' I mean the sort of things we didn't anticipate when setting out on our new journey. The biggest 'crack' was the kids and their 'needs'! Unfortunately, even though they enjoyed being 'home educated', they soon made it obvious that they wanted to be back into mainstream. We have a list the length of our arms of all the things our kids felt they were missing out of and please, please dont think we are trying to suggest this is not a great idea because it is BUT what a disappointment to then realise just how much 'society' has brainwashed and indoctrinated our kids into the way they think today! People will immediately think that we didnt provide the kind of things to stimulate the childs natural ability to learn etc but that is so far from the truth. We were living off grid on an 80 acre estate with a lake, woodland etc, yes it was absolutely idylic, full of natural resources for food heating etc.....

Without going on too much about the finer details as it would take the length of a book to portray the fuller picture, we had no other option but to fit back in with mainstream society for the 'happiness' of our children. You and me know that this type of happiness is probably self destructive but what else can we do when the children feel as though they are missing out on so much? Believe me, it is NOT an easy job to try and explain to a child why they cant have the latest gaming system, the latest iphone etc and to be honest about it I still think they feel we are just being 'tight'. I hope, I really do hope that one day they will thank us for trying to show them a better way and believe me, even though I say we have returned to mainstream living, we still try our best to show the kids an 'alternative' way of life. Sadly society has done an excellent job of brainwashing the masses and it is evident it's not just the kids we are trying to help to see a better way in life but the majority of parents could do with a short sharp shock when it comes down to true living.....

What I can say is that from time to time we do see a bit of what we taught them living 'off grid' does actually show through in their 'normal' day to day. Considering the state of the world as a whole and what may come in the near future regarding conflict and war, lets hope its enough for them to 'kick into gear' and survive the worst of it.

Im going to 'follow' you if thats OK as I'm really interested in this type of discussion.

Thank you. Great story about you and your children. Yay for you. But I am sure that one day your children will look back and treasure this experience. You have planted the seed.... it must just bloom....
