Traveler's Diarrhea
While Thailand was a lot of fun, there is something I must make you all aware of. When you’re trying food at restaurants with buffet type of service in which multiple people will be using the same serving utensils, etc., be cautious of cross-contamination. We personally experienced traveler’s diarrhea during our trip, which began following a situation much like the one described above.
We were served a Thai buffet during one our tours in which all of the guests ate their food prepared/served on the same platter, transferring germs, etc. Additionally, it is also possible that the menu items may have been sitting for too long and not maintained at the appropriate temperatures.
Traveler’s diarrhea is a disorder of the digestive tract in which one may experience diarrheal conditions as well as stomach cramps or “bubble guts.”
Destinations in which it is likely to occur are most of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, and Central and South America.
Common causes leading up to this disorder may come from improper sanitation practices.
While the condition is not fatal, it is very unpleasant. Both my husband and I had this illness for several days even after our return home.
