Paris Tourism Sites Closed in Fear of More Riots

in #life6 years ago (edited)

French tourism sites like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre as well as multiple museums and operas will be closed today, 8 Dec 2018 in fear that another violent breakout will take in place in Paris like last week. Specifically, rioters demoralized the Arc de Triomphe, torched vehicles, and shoplifted stores on Champs Elysees Blvd.

In response to protestor's social media call for "Act IV," or the fourth weekend of protest, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe reported that 65K police officers would be paroling the streets to prevent a repeat.

Culture Minister Franck Riester says that they "cannot afford further risk if they know the threat that comes with it." He also mentioned that some hijackers were planning to take down rallies by "yellow vest" protestors.

Site operators also included that they could not ensure visitors' security if these events were to remain open.

Police have requested for shops and restaurants around the the Champs Elysees and Bastille locations to shut down today as well as 15 precincts to remove anything on the streets that could be used as weapons.

The French government is still contemplating calling back military members from deployed missions to protect the local streets and buildings.
