The Lawn experiment

in #life4 years ago

With having a new place to stay also new projects come up with working in and around the house. Finally after weeks of having rain and nasy drizzle there were some dry spots this week, and that is when I deceided that it was finally time to take care of the lawn outside.

I have never had grass around a house, so if I am honest...my grass skills are absolutely close to zero. But luckily there is google where you can find about nearly everything which can make any garden n00b the next homesteading hero.

So the first conclusion which needed to be made was to see how the quality of the grass is. At first I thought it was a bit neglected by the previous owners with not having enough additional water in there. The Summer was hot and dry here, so that was an easy thing to assume. This partially was true but other problems are also there.

The grass is on the Northern side of the house, which means especially now autumn has reached, there isn't a big deal of sun coming over. So it looked like a good part of the grass was nice and green, but acutally this was more like moss.

You almost can not get it any more nice and green than moss, but moss is an annoying situation in between your grass, because it covers the soil entirely leaving the soil without the sufficient amount of oxygen. You need to take care of this, otherwise you new grass will not stand a chance. How do you do this? You have to aerate it!

Literally an English word I have never heard of. But you do this with a roller like this one, where you pull out the old moss, and you pull lines into the soil, to let it air. Aerate. Remember that!

The next step after this is fertilizing the soil with additional rich ground. The soil has not to much food in there anymore and you have to give it some food. This food is like small balls you through in between the old grass. It smells like manure and I guess it is pressed manure in fact. Make sure it rains 24 hours after that or give it extra water.

Then the grass seed can be tossed over it. Grass seed looks like rice to me honestly, and I am curious how it will do and how fast it will grow.

So this experiment is starting and I have absolutely no arms left anymore from aerating the soil. What a job. But the reward of having the sweet ass little lawn in a couple of weeks will all be worth it.

Hopefully putting the seeds in the ground in October isn't too late. Let's hope winter stays away for a couple of weeks and it will be fine. Fingers crossed and I will let yall know the result
