How to Discover Our Purpose in Life
There comes a time in life where we start wondering what our real purpose in life is. In most cases this process related to our life quest is initiated when one starts popping questions such as: "Is this all there is in life?" or "Is this all life has to offer?". This process is independent of our age and has certainly nothing do with our believes. In fact, this is a stage in our spiritual development to look forward to as it indicates that we are ready for the next phase in life: "Detachment".
Many people are fascinated and dominated by material or earth bound forces. These people can be easily recognized by:
- Level 1: material related goals succesfully achieved in life driven by collecting material wealth e.g. big piece of land, expensive house with interior, expensive cars or boats, expensive jewelry and clothes, expensive food...in one word an expensive lifestyle.
- Level 2: striving for influencial positions and being part of an expanding influencial network consisting of friends with benefits (and power).
- Level 3: earth bound behaviours that are mostly associated with level 1 and 2 such as arrogance, greed, selfishness, jealousy, possesiveness, dominance, etc.
Being dominated by material forces and earth bound behaviours will result in some kind of self-satisfaction but of temporary nature. It also makes it very difficult to have a clear vision in life, which is needed to find our true purpose in life. It's like looking through a vail, preventing us from seeing (clear and) the road ahead. Therefore one may easily get lost or sidetracked. In this maze where one gets tangled, we are subject to cause and effect (karma) and running the risk of getting further away from the true purpose in ones life. But ultimately every one will reach their destination at some point in time. Some people choose the longest route and others have found a short cut.
One can easily imagine that by being trapped in the maze (of actions and related consequences) we created ourselves, we will get hurt and hurt the ones closest to us as well. To get rid of the blurred vision, one needs to initiate the process leading to complete detachment. Not an easy task to let go of excessive material posessions and behaviours as both probably have become addictive over time. Transforming the earth bound behaviours is the most challenging one, as people do not change overnight. However, this is a phase in life we all have to go through one day.
To find ones purpose in life requires clear spiritual vision whereby one is free of all material or earth bound forces and has achieved total detachment. Everything that is excessive in ones life is gone and we deliberately choose not be influenced by these forces. Only then we will start to understand our purpose in life...not a minute sooner.

As a Christian, my purpose in life is to fear God and obey his commandments. But some people are appointed to do a purpose just before they were born. Some may seem to have no purpose but actually have a greater use than most people. Perspective sometimes changes and transforms things.
