My Ghost Guns

DISCLAIMER:

The material provided in this ghost gun guide is intended for law abiding citizens of the United States who have attained legal age, and who have retained legal status. If you are not a U.S. citizen, have not attained legal age, or are a felon, this information is NOT for you; it remains illegal for you to build, own, or otherwise possess any type of firearm.

This is the second installment of How to Build a Ghost Gun. As I mentioned in the first installment, I elected to go with polymer 80% lowers for both of my ghost gun build projects.

I did this for a couple of reasons; they were more cost effective to purchase than any of the aluminum lowers on the market. Polymer is also a lighter material than aluminum and as a survivalist/prepper, that is an important consideration for me...I might have to lug these things on a hike someday and the less weight I have to carry, the better. I also wanted to see how they performed compared to the aluminum lowers some of my friends have.

First things first, while polymer was more cost effective, these ghost gun projects were not about saving money. I purchased polymer 80% lowers from 6 different companies. I eventually found the polymer lowers that I liked...I liked working with them, I liked building them, and I thoroughly enjoy every time I take them to the range. I also didn't want to make a mess using cutting fluid to carve holes out of aluminum.

Performance wise, they hold up to every aluminum lower I have tested them against. I use 30 round magazines with my ghost guns, and have subjected these two ghost guns to rapid fire exercises at the range...emptying an entire magazine as quickly as I could pull the trigger...and I haven't had a single issue with the performance of these polymer lowers.

Since these are the lowers that I chose, we are going to focus on polymer and leave aluminum to those who want to carry around heavy artillery.

Order Your Lower

If you haven't ordered your 80% lower yet, what are you waiting for...? While it is currently legal at the federal level to build, own, and possess ghost guns, the PTB (Powers That Be) are always looking for ways to make gun ownership illegal. If you're serious about building a ghost gun, get moving before it's too late!

I personally recommend Polymer80.com for all your 80% lowers and jigs. You can usually grab the lower, a jig, and the drill bits needed for the milling process, for around $100...or at least you could when I built these...and I was smart enough to grab a few more 80% lowers, just in case.

This is the 80% lower kit, with jig and bits that you can get from Polymer80.com. Once you have the lower, you need to have a method for performing the milling process. While a CNC machine will work best, not everybody has access to these machines, nor do they have the knowledge to input the necessary data correctly.

I used a standing drill press, although I have seen others use smaller table top drill presses. You will need one or the other, and vises to hold the jig tight and in place while milling material from the interior. Now, I could bore you to death with all the intimate details of the milling process, but we're going to skip that in favor of sharing the updated video from Polymer 80 on how to mill one of their polymer 80% lower receivers.

I built my ghost guns a couple of years ago, so the video was a bit different back then. I would also highly recommend downloading and printing off a copy of the readable instructions provided by the company...they may come in handy!

This is the next step of the process. You must complete this before you can do anything else, so we're going to break here, give you some time to digest what has been furnished and to get ready for the next step...completing the lower receiver with a trigger control group. If you enjoyed this post, stay tuned for the next installment...we'll see you then!
