Mythic legends of the ancient Sanskrit Vedas describe the day ETs battled in outer space for galactic domination

Is there life on other planets and have we been visited before by extraterrestrials in our history on this planet? This question may have crossed the minds of many of us as we look up into the night sky and see the vast expanse of space, filled with billions of other planets in millions of other solar systems. The answer to this may lie in the ancient Vedas of India – Sanskrit texts written down about 5000 years ago according to some references.

Today is in fact the annual festival of one of the numerous manifestations or Avatars of Vishnu mentioned in the Vedas, one of the ten “dasavatara” (das means ten in Sanskrit), called Narasimhadeva. The Vedas are full of pastimes, stories or histories which come across like mythic legends of the gods during a bygone era, and the ten avatars of Vishnu are described in detail in a text called Bhagavat Purana. Every year on the day before full moon in the month of May, celebrations are held to commemorate a pastime described in the Seventh canto or volume of this particular Purana. Today is that day and the legend tells of a curious time where powerful species from other planets did battle against each other and even visited the earth on occasion.

The time frame is cosmic in length as these events were supposed to have occurred even hundreds of thousands of earth years ago, although these ancient Vedic texts refer to lengths of time beyond our normal conception of history as a species on the planet. It is known that our planet goes through occasional ice ages that last thousands of years and between the ice ages, a thaw takes place and civilization springs up again, perhaps with little or no remembrance of the civilization that flourished in the previous warm era. In this way we emerged, perhaps even coming out of the bush and cave, having forgotten that millennia before, in a previous era, we were a great civilization on this planet, with technology that we have yet yo remember or rediscover. Look at all the pyramids dotted on every continent from an unknown yet advanced civilization in pre-history, according to our western understanding of history. They certainly allude to some kind of civilization of which we know very little, and their may have been other cultures before that, lost under mountains of glacial ice flow, for example.

Anyway, the Purana tells the legend of a time when there was one leading civilization on the most advanced planet in another universe called Vaikuntha, who was known and respected as the reigning race by all the other races on the other lesser planets scattered throughout the cosmos. However, there were occasionally attempted usurpers, envious of the prestigious position of the topmost “gods”, as they might be seen, considering the unimaginably long lifespans of absolute bliss and full consciousness free from any anxiety on their topmost planet.

These rascal usurpers, who are referred to in fact as demons in the colorful language of the Vedas, were the enemies of the gods, although both were extremely advanced and refined in their civilization and culture on their respective planets, or rather planetary systems. You had the Vishnu planetary system at the topmost level, with basically eternal lifespans, and then you had the demigods and the demons, different races from different planetary systems that fought it out in space or on the planets over the millennia, all the while observed by the Vishnu avatars up on high. And sometimes the more envious demonic species would try to overthrow the demigods or even Vishnu directly.

Well one such powerful military ruler and politician from the lower species became envious of the others, and being of a demonic consciousness he attempted an overthrow, as well as sending his troops to attack and ravage the planets of the more pious demigods. Both of the protagonists on the higher and lower levels of consciousness live limited lifespans as mortals, albeit extremely long lifespans compared to us on earth, but none other than the planet and population of the Vishnu avatar was considered eternal, so to speak. The envious demon military general sent his troops to destroy the pious lifestyle of the others, ruin and kill their teachers, farmers and residents of their capital cities. It was a pillage, attempting to wipe out the advanced spiritual practice or consciousness-raising techniques available on the higher planets. This is much like the Chinese political leaders of the past 70 years or so, since Mao Zedong, who systematically wiped out Buddhist temples and culture wherever they could, including invading and decimating Tibet and its ancient culture of peace and wisdom.

At some point the pious demigods went to Vishnu for protection and he decided to assist them as well as re-establish the higher standards of culture that were being destroyed. He did this more than once over the aeons of time in the cosmos at various planetary systems. On the occasion celebrated today, one powerful military ruler and politician had engaged in many years of yoga and meditation involving severe austerity, sacrifice and penance, until he was able to invoke some mystic power where he could never be killed. Well almost never because no one but the Vishnu avatar planet has the opportunity for an eternal life with no more death. Still, he invoked a smart contract where he could not be killed by person or beast, inside or outside, in the day or the night, on the land or in the air, with weapon or by hands. So in this way he wished to bypass the inevitability of death.

And during his time as an invincible military leader, he inflicted much distress to the other planets of the more civilized demigods, until they went to Vishnu for protection. The legend comes to a peak on this particular day, celebrated today, where the demon wanted to kill his own son because the youth was exhibiting pious behaviour and not submitting to his lessons at military school for young despots, like the one in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, called the School of the Americas, where the US trains young leaders from the South American nations to be dictators and then sends then off as puppets to rule like despots over their poor and helpless citizens all over South America. Little demons, compared to the real types from the lower planetary systems.

At this point the big rascal tried to kill his son but failed and called out in rage to him – so where is this so-called Vishnu of yours that gives you shelter? And the boy replied – he is everywhere father. To which the demon said – well if he is everywhere then is he in this pillar? To which the boy said – yes father he is even in the pillar. Thereupon the envious military general took out his weapons and said something along the lines of – well then I will smash this pillar and destroy your Vishnu – and proceeded to blast the pillar, at which point out of the pillar emerged Vishnu himself, in a very curious guise, that of a half man-half lion. I kid you not, that’s how the myth unfolds and there is a reason for it.

Remember all those protective mystic powers the general obtained where he could not be killed inside or outside, etc? Well the manifestation of man-lion was Vishnu’s way of respecting the mystic powers but at the same time finding a loophole around all of them in order to still kill the demonic military general there and then. To circumvent them he was neither man nor animal, but both, he was neither inside or outside when he killed the politician but at the doorway between both, it was neither day or night but dusk, he was not on land or in the air but rather held the general on his lap, and he used neither weapon or bare hand, but rather tore the entrails of the wannabe usurper with the lion claws that were his nails. He nailed him, ripped his guts out and wore them as a garland!

Anyway, that’s how the legend goes and it is explained in detail in the Vedic text called Bhagavat Purana along with numerous other legends that I will tell you in other posts in future. The conclusion is that these pastimes repeatedly talk of these extra-terrestrial species from other planets in other solar systems that have been battling for power in the galaxies for aeons all around us and we are the center of it all in the sense that there are species more advanced than us and those less cultured as far as etiquette and morality, though very much more technologically advanced. Whatever it is, this legendary tale from the mists of history, it seems to allude to the forces of good being very easily able to put the attempted attacks by the demonic races in their place in the cosmos.

May they continue to keep the balance in the universe between the interplanetary races, while simultaneously protecting our humble existence here on the third rock from the sun in our little solar system off to the side in our Milky Way Galaxy. Heaven knows we may need it.

I remember this story from the Purana, and was always amazed at the cleverness of the story! Your recounting of the story is fascinating, especially the way you frame it within the possibility of beings from other universes. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya! 🙌

Haribol! You are a rare soul who actually has heard of the Bhagavat Purana. I presume it was at the temple? I trained in Cape Town in the ashram for 10 years in the nineties.

No, I have never been to temple or an ashram. I have done much reading in my life, exploring various religions and philosophies of the world in an effort to find the Truth. I have read some of the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, the Bhaghavad Gita, various treatises of Advaita by Adi Shankara, as well as texts by Osho, Alan Watts, H.H. Dalai Lama, and others. I was also thrilled to have been loaned a copy of the epic "Vishnu Puran" series of DVDs, with English subtitles a decade ago, and watched them all voraciously. All of those things resonated with more Truth than the scriptures and treatises of any other religious tradition. 🕉

I am impressed that you have such a natural interest and attraction for the writings on consciousness. You are one of the most well-informed people, and are pursuing the real goal of life in this way.

You're most welcome!

Great article, so much stuff from the past that we don't know!

Thank you for your positive feedback, yes there are a wealth of curious legends and fortunately the original texts were translated in the sixties and seventies. I started studying them in the eighties. The Mystery traditions of East and West have a lot of occult or hidden knowledge or pastimes that allude to history or simply insights about human existence.

What is important to remember everything has a start and an end.
