Is it your Brain that dictates your Heart or is it vice-versa?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

These are the common questions we encounter in our daily life:

1. Shall I follow my brain or my heart?

2. Shall I pick the things the make me happy?

3. I am happy, but is it right?

Science teach us that the brain or the cognitive aspect of a human body controls or greatly affects the feelings and behaviors of a person. What we perceive is what we receive. If you wanna be happy, you have to think of the things that make you happy.

For me, it is the other way around. Our heart dictates exactly what we think and how we behave. That is why the bible says in Proverbs 4:23, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." No one lost their sanity because they are too smart, neither because of overused brain. However, most people lost their sanity because of emotional distress, pressure, and broken hearts.

The bible refers to the heart as  the whole innermost part of a human, not merely the emotions. Every person has to protect his/her own innermost being. This will reflect who you really are.

How is your Heart today?

I have a different take on it, based on biology and the work of James Bonnet. If you think about it, we evolved with a succession of brain tissue superseding all the layers beneath it. On the brainstem there is the lizard brain which controls respiration and is a large part of our lower emotions, for example anger and hate. This is overlaid by the mammalian brain, and finally this is a overlaid by the neocortex. Advanced emotional processing occurs in the neocortex; including things like honor and duty and love.
Both higher and lower processing occur simultaneously. We can be pulled down into anger and hate or we can rise up into love and respect. We all walk a tightrope between heaven and hell in this way, on a tightrope between the lower evolved brain and the higher evolved brain.
It seems to be a natural proclivity, this inner conflict we endure and interestingly, which we replicate in our society and take enjoyment of, in our literature, movies and art.
In any event we need to pay attention to the tightrope and consciously choose between the heaven and hells we can create in our own lives.

Scientifically speaking, your explanation is impressive. We took things in two different perspective, that is why, there is no way we could argue about this topic.

I tend to not get too emotional and try to be objective and rational as much as possible. Simply put, before you do anything, you must think it. Your heart then helps decide your actions including methods. Just my thoughts!

I agree. Actually if you would imagine your heart (not literally the structure) it feels like your seeing something deep and wide. It is like, when you talk about your heart, you are refering to yourself as a whole. Example, when you said, "your heart is broken", not not merely pertaining to your heart or emotion, but u are actually pertaining to yourself, your entirety, your whole being. So, damaging your heart is simply damaging yourself.
