That is an excellent question! Too many claims are made without any reasonable substantiation. Here's some of the research references I found:

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

And a paper by Kent C. Berridge and Terry E. Robinson, which as yet I have been unable to find a link, What is the role of dopamine in reward: hedonic impact, reward learning, or incentive salience?: Brain Research Reviews, 28, 1998. 309–369.

There are probably many more studies on this matter coming to similar conclusions I find it very logical and evident that social media can and does have these effects.
