THE HEAVIEST DOOR I'VE EVER SEEN

in #life7 years ago

Putting down the threshold to the back back door was filled with problems.

First of all the screws holding the hinges were stripped.

Evidently whoever drilled the holes originally used a drill bit that was too small and just jammed the screws in. No way to get them out. In order to cut the bottom length off door it would have be taken down off the hinges.

Luckily I have a Dremel with a cut off wheel.

It took me a while with sparks flying and a few broken cut off wheels, but finally I got the heads off the screws and could take the door down.
Except that it has to be the heaviest door I've ever seen. Exceptionally hard wood. Must be gum wood or something.
Using some of the old carpeting I was able to teeter totter the thing which of course has to have a full length panel of glass in it... don't t drop it, right!

Then the circular saw. did not want to even try to cut the hard wood. It really just burnt it's way through. Took a while but finally got about 1/4 inch off the bottom.

Getting it back up was a lot easier, although moving and positioning something that heavy I can hardly say was "easy"
But it's done. I re-drilled the holes for the hinge screws to the correct size and it was easy peasy getting them in.

Putting the hand made threshold down was pretty much without problems.

@ jiva34, maybe because of good quality wood, damaged drill spikes, maybe after work it will look very neat.
