LOT MORE OF A FIXER-UPPER THAN I THOUGHT

in #life7 years ago

More house stuff.
There is a moisture problem under the house.
Not standing water. It is dry there even during Irma.
But the floor is built very close to the ground.
A person cannot really even crawl under there.
Stupid to build like that. What would it have hurt to put even just one more row of concrete block?
Anyway I am sure it was a DIY house.

A pro came today who fixes crawl space problems.
The good news is that the wood is in great shape.
It is all heart wood. very very hard wood and no rot, termites or mold on the wood itself.
Phew!
But the ground is nasty. Not wet but damp and the smells are very strong.
He says he can fix it. Do some tunneling so they can get under there and also take part of the flooring up to access a part of the house that was blocked off by a concrete wall under the house running the length of it and dividing it in two. Great for support but not for getting under there if needed.
Another pro is coming in a couple of weeks to give his estimation of what needs to be done.
Meanwhile peeling up nasty sticky vinyl tiles and trying to clean up the mess left behind by all the goo.
Lot more of a fixer upper than I thought.

Wow! I'm glad it can be fixed. My sister has had moisture problems in their crawlspace even though it's much bigger. Keep us posted!

They want to encapsulate it. No vents to the outside. put heavy duty plastic sheeting everywhere and hook up a dehumdifier. that's the norm these days. But it is so low to the ground they will have dig out some and pull up flooring too. But the musty smells which come up into the house are really awful. Supposed to help filter out radon gas too if there is any down there. Hope this is the last of the big stuff.

Wow super
