Christianity came to the Philippines when it was colonized by the Spanish. Then different festivals came that is being celebrated throughout the year. Celebrating the feast of their Patron Saints. It is also one of the reasons why tourist from all over the world visits the Philippines. Sinulog is considered to be the grandest and most colorful festival in the Philippines. It is being celebrated on the third Sunday of January in Cebu city. It celebrated in honor of their Patron Saint, Sto. Niño, “The Child Jesus”.

There are also other places in the Philippines that celebrate this festival. So together with my forever travel buddy, we joined a small area in our community, as they celebrate the feast of Sto. Niño, The Sinulog.

It was a sunny sunday morning on the 21st day of January. My travel buddy and I went to Sto. Niño-Kalubihon, Barangay Dalipuga, Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, Philippines. Their Sinulog parade started at around two in the afternoon. It was participated by the residents of Sto. Niño-Kalubihon with their Sto. Niño statues.

The route of the parade was just around their area.

Some kids are also wearing a Sto. Niño attire because they were preparing for their Sinulog Competition.

There was only one category. The contingents are representatives from the Children, the youth and from the mothers. I was also been invited to be one of the judges of the said competition.

It was really amazing to witness the Sinulog Celebration of Sto. Niño-Kalubihon. Seeing their beautiful choreographies, bright costumes and most especially the smile of their faces as they dance to the beat of the drums.

The first performer was the Kids. Their performance was really amazing because they really looked good in their costumes. Though their steps and costumes are different from each other but still they manage to finish the dance beautifully. They won the third prize.

The second performer was the Mothers of Sto. Niño-Kalubihon. Despite their busy schedules with their house chores and taking good care of their kids, they were able to practice their performance that’s why they won the first prize of the competition.

The last performer was the youth of Sto. Niño-Kalubihon who won the second prize. Their queen is really pretty and has so much grace in her indigenous attire. Their choreography was nice but they were not that synchronized. But in totality, it was a great performance from all of the contingents.

We were also invited to eat in different houses in Sto. Niño-Kalubihon. Some did really prepared a lot of food and some did just prepare enough to celebrate the feast with their family. What’s more important is the thought of celebrating the festival.

I really enjoyed my first time to celebrate Sinulog Festival. I hope next year, I would be able to celebrate it in Cebu to witness their grand celebration of Sinulog.
