Why we stopped asking "How was everything?"

in #life7 years ago

Everyone wants something for free and most people will take advantage of you to get it. This isn't always the case....... however it certainly seemed so when our restaurant had the policy of asking people "How was everything?" before they left.

Ten years ago we used to wait by the front doors when we would see someone leaving, and we would ask them the magic question. Now keep in mind that these are the same people that we had talked to multiple times all throughout out their visit.

There was the man enjoying his glass of wine who had a handshake and a heartfelt pat on the back for me.

There was the woman who whispered to me that our baby back ribs were absolutely heavenly.

They were people enjoying themselves and enjoying our great food and friendly atmosphere.

Once they got to the front door though and were asked that question "How was everything?"....... they completely changed.

"Usually when I come here the food is really good...... but today that hamburger was absolutely inedible."

This from a guy who devoured his burger in five minutes and then told his friend that it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had.

"The steak I got today was all grizzle when usually it's really lean and delicious."

It was a great cut of meat that had no grizzle on it.

We have a policy, you see, to take care of our customers at all costs.

At OUR cost.

That means we will comp your meal if you are unsatisfied.

We used to think that if you WERE satisfied then you would tell us how HAPPY you were with your meal when you left. However we did not take into account how much people love getting things for free.

You know what? Once we stopped asking people "How was everything?".......... then everything was great.

I guess it's sort of sad and funny at the same time.

I hope you liked this one.

I think best answer for question why everything is changing and in many cases for worst is before we lived in community now we live in crowd!

That's definitely true. I try to see the good side though because I know some things are changing for the worst but there are some things that are also changing for the better.

It is kind of sad that people complain just for free stuff. I enjoy telling restaurant staff when I enjoy their food to make them feel like they are doing a great job. It's a shame when people complain just to get their food comped even if they really did enjoy their food.

It does suck. It seems like most people just want something for free.

Oh gosh yes. If there's a real problem, tell the manager and get it sorted out so you can go home with proper food in your belly! And if everything's been wonderful, tell Yelp!

I go out to eat alot I always give kudos because usually everything is good and fine when something is not fine I want them to know so they can fix it for other ppl .. I make an anonymous phone call and tell them the problem because if someone in the restaurant Is not doing right management needs to know 🕊

I had to stop reading momentarily because of the crazed woman you have in your article...lol. I think people walk the earth feeling as though they are owed something. What's even worse is people forget that humanity should come above selfishness and sometimes they'll have to pay for such nonsense. I worked in a couple restaurants in my teens and saw customers abuse the hell out of staff. Little did they know their food was being contaminated I'll say...lol

Well we would never contaminate food or do anything to harm our guests no matter the cause but it is still fairly ridiculous to see people act like that just because they can to get something for free.

Yep. It also seems like by default, people are more likely to complain than to give positive feedback. That's why when we go out to eat and have a really great experience with the waiter/waitress, I try to make it a habit of finding the manager on duty and letting them know that our server did an excellent job.

good work keeping up
