How do you train someone that already thinks they know everything?
I am a trainer at my restaurant.
Since I've been working there for over 10 years I train all sorts of people.
I train servers, hosts, and even managers.
I'm a pretty relaxed person. I don't take my work too seriously even though I do it very well.
Most people really enjoy training with me and I enjoy training them too.
People come in all shapes and forms.
You have to be ready to learn when you come apply for a job..... but there are quite a few people in this world that think they already know everything there is to know about everything.
Those people are very difficult to train.
Training those people often goes like this......
"The first thing that I want to tell you is........"
"Yeah, yeah of course I know that."
"You don't even have any idea what I was going to say though."
"Trust me it doesn't matter...... I've been working in the restaurant business for 6 years now. I know everything there is to know."
"Perhaps so but you haven't worked at our restaurant before and we don't necessarily do things the way other people do."
"Yeah yeah."
These people probably don't realize it that I also grade them and give my report to the manager before they go on to the next step in the training.
I trained a girl like this today.
She had exactly 6 years of restaurant experience which, in my opinion, is not very much.
She thought she knew more than I did even though I've been working at this particular restaurant for over 11 years now.
She answered every question I asked her with "Yeah yeah" and "Of course of course."
I moved her on to the next stage of training but I did inform the manager that I felt we might have problems with this girl in the future.
She didn't seem like she would be a bad server but she did seem like someone I wouldn't personally want to work with closely for very long.
Sometimes you just have to say absolutely and listen to what people say even if you think you know everything.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is let someone fail. As the trainer, you can set them up to fail at something that won't cause a major problem(if possible). They straighten up pretty quickly after that.
That's definitely true.
Interesting task....
You need to smile from inside and feign a strict face...
Watch their reaction and enjoy laughing inside..lol
I do that.
I have not been in the position to train people like this, but I have had to work with people like this on some projects, and when they come acting all-knowing and bossy, I step back a little and allow them make a fool of themselves. The only downside is that, time would have been wasted.
It is a really interesting topic. As an artist I teach art. Sometimes it really blows my mind when people come from far, pay for a class, don’t listen to anything and at the end are really disappointed because the others (who did take feedback, worked with me) had better results. I see those kind of cases as people, who did not get out of the teenage years. Tender sarcasm is for me the only way to deal with them. In most cases I just hope not to have them;)
