A Treasure Hunting Story: 2 Vintage Chinese Hand Painted Porcelain Plates

I went to an estate sale recently here in Southern California where I purchased a few items including these two vintage Chinese hand-painted porcelain plates. Both are marked Qianlong Qing Dynasty (1735-1796). The porcelain paintings are lovely and colors are vibrant.

The previous owner was a collector. His house was full of Chinese and Japanese artifacts. It is often the case in estate sales that the collector loved his collections, but when he passes away, his family is not interested in his collections. Usually, the house is for sale, and everything inside must go.

Hand-painted plates often depict ancient stories. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to recognize the stories on either of these plates
There are Qianlong marks on the back of the plates. It is often difficult to authenticate these marks, but judging from the previous owner’s other pieces and some travel guides he kept, these plates probably were purchased in Hong Kong in the 70’s – over 40 years ago.

I listed them both for sale on eBay and was pleasantly surprised to see them sell quickly to a buyer in China. It’s exciting to think they are returning to where they originated, after 40 years.
