Comedia Del Improv Intros

in #life7 years ago

Greetings from Backstage! What does Contemporary Improv have in common with Comedia Del Arte' and where can you start to learn more?

Improv has gone through a bit of a renaissance lately. But its roots go back to the middle ages and the renaissance itself. Today one can google 'improv' in their hometown and likely find a theater or local college troupe. It has seen a significant boom in appeal and empowerment to artists and communities. LA has a huge scene. New York has a huge scene. St Louis has an incredible learning institution. Austin has a live and thriving scene. Chicago is still the reigning Mecca of the arts. And the best way to describe improv, is simply to go and see it live.

Presently one can see a longform or shortform improv show. Shortform shows are fast and fun. Longform shows are rich with enjoyable characters and themes. Both experiences are discovered and appreciated by players and audiences in real time, never to be seen again. Each theater will also have it's own style, and improv teams are as different as wild birds. Yet all the improv today has some roots in what was once the most popular style of theater throughout most of Europe, Comedia del Arte.

Comedia del Arte uses the same principles of "Yes And" that are used in today's improv. The differences are that Comedia uses familiar character archetypes, locales, power relationships, with a strong emphasis on emotional states. In this video I free form reflect from backstage my thoughts on comedia del arte and it's relationship to present day improv. I have also developed an introductory Improv Intensive for students interested in learning more about comedia del arte. I am not an expert, just an expereinced student and aprecianado of the living arts, especially improv and comedia del arte.

If you are an improvisers, I look forward to your comments below. Whether you are an artist or a loyal patron of the stage, I welcome your thoughts on improv and comedia del arte. And if you and your friends are looking to learn, by all means leave your questions below.

All the best ~ Jacob TS
