"Daylight Saving Time" Needs to End

in #life9 years ago (edited)

As someone who suffers from chronic illness, this is an incredibly difficult time for me. In the USA, most states switched to "Daylight Saving Time" (DST) on Sunday. Today, I think this government-mandated hassle has caught up to me despite my efforts to cope with it, and I had to go home early from work. I was in no condition to drive a delivery van safely. Even driving my own familiar car home along familiar roads was extremely difficult.

Before anyone says, "Just go to sleep earlier and you'll be fine," I say, "[vulgar rant censored by Steemit protocols] and if you like getting up an hour earlier, just do it. Don't demand everyone else do the same as well, you self-centered ignoramus control freak!" My circadian rhythm does not like the mandatory early rise. Sleep never comes easily for me. DST throws off my sleep cycle and it takes a good week at least for me to acclimate no matter what I try.

I'm not the only one suffering from this mandatory jet lag. Many studies suggest an increased rate of auto accidents following the clock shift. There is also evidence of other health risks that cannot be ignored. Admittedly, people are active in the evenings, and the illusion of more time later in the day could promote safety at night, but the number of daylight hours is not actually changed.

There are many blog posts and articles from many different sources and points of view discussing the matter from all angles. There's even a website for a campaign to end Daylight Saving Time.

The simple fact is that the data does not support energy savings, it does suggest health and auto accident risks, and it certainly doesn't help farmers whose cattle don't care what the clock says. Personally, I don't care whether we're on Standard Time or DST. All I want is to not be required to change my clock and feel like crap. Is that really asking too much?

The whole concept is moronic and doesn't work.

We don't do DST in Arizona because a bunch of restaurant owners petitioned the state to get rid of it. Love it.

sorry about your health state. i hope your voice gets heard. we aren't directly affected by it here but cos we tend to people in the USA in customer service, our changed too. so i am up at 2am. shud have upvoted but it may mean nilch and my voting power is practically exhausted from too much upvoting and i waiting for it to recover. resteemed though. always take care.

Thanks for the kind words. DST is a completely asinine relic that only persists due to tradition and government inertia. I am tempted to move to Arizona, since most of that state ignores this absurd ritual.

Totally agree DST is complete bollox. I find it depressingly moronic.
In the UK when it's getting dark so early they put the clocks back and it's dark even earlier so in the evening it's like being thrust forward a month into winter. Then it's lighter earlier so in the morning it's like being shoved back into summer.

In Spain we are not even located in the gmt correctly, so it is a more serious problem... maybe it´s a conspiracy
